Kamille
I've taken up running and have increased my endurance so I can now run 5 miles (cue olympic music please, as I dance around waving my arms triumphantly). Sure, it takes me 55 minutes to run 5 miles, but hey, everyone has to start somewhere right? Here's why I'm posting (ha! you were starting to think I was only posting to brag weren't you?). My playlist is atrocious for running and I spent a lot of time staring at my ipod trying to find a good work out song. For running, I seem to like upbeat songs. Below is a list of songs that currently get me going - they're quite erratic, but they give you an idea I have a feeling - Black Eyed Peas Ready to Start - Arcade fire Rebellion - Arcade fire Suddenly I see - KT Tunstall Rolling in the Deep - Adele Sexyback - Justin Timbalake Fu-Gee-La - Fugees The Sweet Escape - Gwen Stefanie Bad Romance - Lady Gaga So yeah, pretty all over the place, but maybe it'll give you ideas. What songs would recommend for running.
Squish
Ooh will have to check some of your recommendations out! Some fave songs on my running playlist are: Kiss With A Fist - Florence and the Machine Mr. Blue Sky - ELO/Lily Allen Walking on Sunshine - Katrina & The Waves Dance With Me Tonight - Olly Murs (that one really makes me bounce while I'm running, which helps with momentum) Well done on the 5 miles! I have a long way to go before I can do that!! x
Squish
Oh and the boyfriend has just recommended Push It To The Limit by Paul Engemann from Scarface, proper 80's cheese, love it!
Author Kamille
Just checked out and loved the Florence and the machine one. And Walking on Sunshine! Classic tune! Well done on the 5 miles! I have a long way to go before I can do that!! x My first goal was 3.2 miles (5K) and once I reached it I just seemed to jump straight through to 5 miles. I'm training to run a 5K in less than 30 minutes at a (my first) race this spring. So right now I'm training for speed - and endurance really helps with speed.
Squish
I'm doing a similar thing, only I'm weeks behind you! Got a Couch to 5k app on my phone and running my way through it, or should I say jogging! Up to 20 mins straight so far :S Good luck with your race!
Author Kamille
I'm doing a similar thing, only I'm weeks behind you! Got a Couch to 5k app on my phone and running my way through it, or should I say jogging! Up to 20 mins straight so far :S Hey, in December I was panting through 20 minutes of running. 20 is already awesome. I don't know what your apps makes you do, but one of the things that's really helped me to reach the 5K was to have days when I would run shorter runs at higher speed (say a 10 minute mile). Because it's less time, it's easier to push myself out of my comfort zone and I found I really reaped the benefits on the next long run.
jerbear
I'll add: Vangelis - Chariots of Fire Cliche but oh well.
Anela
How about this? I'm trying to remember what I made for myself ten years ago, when I thought about taking up running (it really isn't for me). I had that piece of music from "Behind Enemy Lines" when they're taking off in their plane, but I can't remember what it's called. I also had the music from "Run Lola Run" and "All That Jazz" from Chicago. I might still have the CD somewhere.
Squish
That sounds like a good idea. The app concentrates on time really, you start doing 8x1 minute runs, then you up that slightly to 6x1 1/2 runs, then 3 min runs, 5 minutes, 8 minutes then the big jump to 20, and so on. The final week is a 30 minute run, but many people who complete it don't actually do 5k even though they're running the half hour. So then they start to up their speed. I've had to go back a week though as I was ill last week, so I'm back to 5 minute runs. So I may go up a notch or two on Wednesday as you suggested, give myself a little challenge Thanks! x

Star Gazer
Kam, I have two different running playlists. One for easy/long training runs (done at conversational pace), and another for speedwork and race days. My music is really all over the place too, but here are some of my favorites of the moment: LONG/EASY (Goal: Keep me entertained and feelings like a strong running woman at a solid pace): Breathe Carolina, "Blackout" Florence + The Machine, "Dog Days Are Over" Jessie J, "Domino" The Wanted, "Glad You Came" Miranda Lambert, "Gunpowder & Lead" JTX, "Love in America" Panic! at the Disco, "Ready to Go" <----- This is currently my abso fave! Fort Minor, "Remember the Name" Adele, "Rumour Has It" Hunter Hayes, "Storm Warning" David Guetta/Nicki Minaj, "Turn Me On" Foo Fighters, "Walk" Kelly Clarkson, "What Doesn't Kill You" Keith Urban, "You Gonna Fly" SPEED/RACE (Goal: Kick a$$ and go FAST!): Lesley Roy, "I'm Gone, I'm Going" Buckcherry, "Crazy B*tch" Billy Idol, "Dancing With Myself" <----- Careful, this one will make you go FAST! Matchbox Twenty, "How Far We've Come" Jay-Z & Linkin Park, "Numb/Encore" The Knux, "Run" (Lots of the above easy/long songs are on my speed/race playlist too.) Hope that helps!! Yay for runners!! runner
Hope that helps!! Yay for runners!! YaY indeed ! K, just a thought...running with music is awesome for sure, but every now and then you might want to run without it and really listen to what your body is telling you. get a sense of your stride, your speed, how your joints feel, and how you're breathing. i find it helpful to take close note of how i'm performing to see if i'm out of form, out of shape or improving where i wanted to. this sort of self awareness can keep you safe in that 'calibrating' sort of way if that makes sense as for music: if i'm getting my heart rate up i like to go with electronic stuff; tiesto, etc. for long distance runs, pretty much whatever i'm already listening to in any case. Toodamnpragmatic
I listen to podcasts. That way I'm killing two birds with one stone.
Lauriebell82
I do a combination of a lot of different songs. Mostly I like to listen to fast paced loud type music to keep me going. I think that Linkin Park and old school hip hop music (like TLC, Ja Rule, Nelly, Dr. Dre) keeps me going for hte most part. I don't generally like slow paced songs because when I'm especially tired on the threadmill they don't keep me motivated to keep running. Hip hop music works the best IMO. PlumPrincess
Am I the only one who starts breathing to the rhythm of the music? Running and listening to music just doesn't work for me.
Author Kamille
Yay! So much music. Thanks all. I'm currently checking some out. (I can't believe about I'm sexy and I know it. That one really cracks me up). YaY indeed ! K, just a thought...running with music is awesome for sure, but every now and then you might want to run without it and really listen to what your body is telling you. get a sense of your stride, your speed, how your joints feel, and how you're breathing. i find it helpful to take close note of how i'm performing to see if i'm out of form, out of shape or improving where i wanted to. this sort of self awareness can keep you safe in that 'calibrating' sort of way if that makes sense Thanks for the tip runner (Yay for runner and Runners!) I tried it out this morning (it was a short run with sprints). I was expecting my runs to be "slower" without the music, but the opposite happened. I never ran so fast and it felt really good.
Author Kamille
Am I the only one who starts breathing to the rhythm of the music? Running and listening to music just doesn't work for me. Crossposted: that could explain why I had a much stronger stride without the music. I find I tend to match my steps to the beat, so the music really impacts how I run.
Author Kamille
Billy Idol, "Dancing With Myself" <----- Careful, this one will make you go FAST! Agreed! I've had that one on my list for ages now and it's all I can do to not start dancing frantically right smack in the middle of my run.
