The legal age of consent in the UK is 16 btw, so no.

The age of consent here may be 16 but a 27 year old dating a 16 year old is sick and tantamount to child abuse in my eyes!

If any 27 year old went near my 16 yr old I would shoot him in the balls!

Only with parental permission.

I have yet to encounter a sixteen-year-old, however who has ever asked the immortal question -

"Mum, Dad, is it OK if I bosh the BF/GF tonight?"

Explain to me how much in common a 16 year old and a 27 year old would have with each other. No matter how mature a 16 year old is, there's no possible way they could ever be mature enough to handle a 27 year old predator/pedophile.

I may have been incorrect. This is a most illuminating article - and may go towards answering your question, TbF....:)

I agree with TBF and the thought of a 27 year old dating a 16 year old is creepy, vile and child abuse not matter about the maturity levels of those involved!

Geish, the legality of it doesn't change my stance on emotional maturity level of the two individuals involved.

Lishy, I also agree it's sick and creepy.

Oh, sorrt TbF... I wasn't trying to change your mind or anything...I thought it would just give different insight....just added info. That's all. :o

Plenty of 14 year-olds are having responsible sex in Italy, and they're enjoying every second of their rite of passage. It's one of the reasons that the Italians are so good at boning. Practice makes perfect, and it's time to stop treating teenagers like children.

Not to worry. I understand.

The situation that this thread branched off from, was a "relationship" between a 16 and 27 year old. This wasn't simply a case of wanting to bop another individual, although even then, it's creepy as hell.

except that now, 10 years on, they are still together as a 26 year old and a 37 year old, so yes, I'd call that a "relationship".

There appears to be some control issues within that "relationship".

Regardless, it doesn't change the fact that a 27 year old could have biologically been her father. Do you condone this relationship? I don't. I find it sick and creepy that someone who's 27 years old, finds a mate in a 16 year old.

I totally agree with you, however, when I was a few weeks shy of my 16th birthday, I had sex for the first time with a 21 year old. Didn't scar me for life, but god forbid my daughter do the same thing.

Feel like a hypocrite - not sure why I'm sharing this :o

hmmm, I will be the first say that it depends on the gender.

A 16 year old girl having intercourse with a 27 year old man is, unacceptable to me.

A 16 year old boy having intercourse with a 27 year old woman, although not great - is not near as bad.

Being female should have nothing to do with an abhorrence of this type of predatory behaviour.

annieo, I think the gap should be no more than 5 years, due to levels of emotional maturity.

I know lots of 11 year-olds that are fathers. What rubbish!

If a 14 year-old hooks up with a 28 year-old, then I would have a problem. He could definitely have been her father.

Puberty doesn't begin for everyone, with the average age. There are eleven year olds that have begun puberty.

Understand that my abhorrence is not with the actual age gap but with the age gap in relation to the emotional level of a 16 year old. If the two had begun their relationship as a 26 and 37 year old, this wouldn't be sick and creepy for me.

Heres how I feel about this. A 16 year old girl is to young for pretty much any one older then like 18. Once your 18 your off to college you might have your own place your own car and its just unrelatable. some 16 year old girls look like babies some can look hot though. Now if you talk to a 16 year old who is hot you'll quickly realize they are 16. But from looks alone a hot 16 year old can be hard to tell from say a hot 19 or 20 year old they can look alot alike. My favorite age for girls right now is probably 21

So - I take it you would have felt equal abhorrence if an 11-year-old boy had made a 13 year-old girl pregnant...?

Happens a lot in the UK.....

The U.K, which has the highest teenage birth rate in Europe (20 births per 1,000 women aged 15–19 in 2002[3]), also has a higher rate of abortion than most European countries. 80% of young Britons reported engaging in sexual intercourse while still in their teens, although a half of those under 16, and one-third of those between 16 to 19, said they did not use a form of contraception during their first encounter. Less than 10% of British teen mothers are married and a relatively high proportion of them are under the age of 16. Adolescent pregnancy is viewed as a matter of concern by both the British government and the British press.

I would find that incredibly sad, wondering what type of family environment both these children were raised in. :(

It's statistically from the lower end of the social strata.... yep. Sad.

We know less about who becomes a

young father (but the above refers to

young parents). Evidence suggests

(Kiernan, 1995) that young fathers

(defined as those who became fathers

before the age of 22), like young

mothers, are more likely to come from

lower socio-economic groups, from

families that have experienced financial

difficulties, and are more likely than

average to have left school at the

minimum age.

There is some evidence that certain

groups of young people seem to be

particularly vulnerable to becoming

teenage parents. They include:

• Young people in or leaving care

(Biehal, 1995)

• Homeless young people (JRF, 1995)

• School excludees, truants and young

people under-performing at school

(Kiernan, 1995)

• Children of teenage mothers (Botting

et al., 1998)

• Members of some ethnic minority

groups (Botting et al., 1998;

Berthoud, 2001) – for example,

Caribbean, Pakistani and Bangladeshi

women are more likely than white

women to have been teenage

mothers

• Young people involved in crime

(Botting et al., 1998)

• Conception rates are slightly higher

in the north of England than the

south, although there is a lot of

regional variation (Botting et al.,

1998).
