Dealing with unprofessionalism - even before the interview?

Recommended Posts

This never really happened to me until lately, oddly enough this is happening on the same day.

Scenario 1:

About 2 1/2 weeks ago i had a short somewhat over the phone interview with the CEO of a small firm (it was about the position i had applied for over the web a week prior to the call). He said he'd get back to me later in the day.

So I check my email today (which is 2 1/2 weeks later), and i get an email from him apologizing about not getting back to me with some BS excuse and talking about setting up a good time for me to come in for an interview.

Scenario 2:

Initially there was a scheduled interview for this morning at 10am. The night before i checked my email, there was an email and the interviewer asked that we rescheduled for 11 or 11:30 (she said she was going to be in a meeting). So i respond back saying ill be there at 11:30. I show up today at 11:40 (late i know), the receptionist contacts her and says she's in a meeting with the boss (and has been for hte past hour (since 10:40)) and said the interview was supposed to be at 11. So im thinking Bull***** - trying to make it look like it's my fault. Even if i did show up at 11 she'd still be in the meeting regardless. So she rescheduled me to come in next monday at 5.

I could've called her on out on her BS, and remained there until she got out of the meeting for the interview but i dont know if being assertive wouldve helped since im not in a good position.

So im thinking they can kiss my ***. I have a feeling it will be pointless going on these 2 interviews. Because i know likely i wont be hired because neither of them take these interviews seriously - its hard to when they interview so much candidates for the position already.

I know im going to have to suck in my pride and play by their rules if i want a 10% shot of getting hired...im just pissed if its even worth it.

Rule of thumb: never turn down an interview unless you know you absolutely don't want the job.

From the looks of things, the interviewer seems a bit unprofessional but sometimes, things do come up in the course of a day and people need to reschedule interviews. I would maybe give the guy another shot and see what happens. It would ideally be better if you knew someone who works at the company or has worked there before so that they can tell you what it's really like on the inside. I would be inclined to veer away from unorganized and unprofessional offices otherwise.
