My father was killed 7 years ago and my only brother is in jail. norajane
You can ask anyone you want to give you away, even your mother, if that's what you want. There are no "shoulds" when it comes to that - it's your choice based on which person means something special to you.
Citizen Erased
Choose the person you have the closest connection with. Even if it is a friend, or like norajane said, your mother.
catrocks
My cousin's dad died a couple of years before she got married, and she had her mother give her away. It was really nice and she did a great job. You should have whoever you want to give you away, it's your wedding and therefore you should do what you want and not feel that you have to live up to other people's expectations, like having a man give you away. Knittress
Maybe it's the feminazi streak in me, but I've considered when/if I get married walking down the aisle alone. I'd like to think as a modern woman that I'm not property to be 'given away.' ::shrug:: Or maybe it's just because I'm not particularly close to my father or stepfather. Anyhow, it's something to consider...
