Do I have any right to be mad

Recommended Posts

I've been at my job for almost 7 years. Me and my co-worker pretty much started at the same time, me starting about 3 months before him.

The whole time, we've worked on the same level. Sharing responsibilities and working on projects which are equally on the same level.

There was never a heirachy between us, we both were two workers doing both our jobs, helping each other out. We've had people who have come on board with us, and left, but for the most part its just been us two.

About 6 months ago we have had a bunch of changes in our company. Afftecting us is we have another worker on our team as well a new boss.

I just found out that today, that my partner became manager of our team to report to the upper managent. This took me quite by suprise. In all my reviews I've expressed interest in moving into supervisor roles or management roles in this company. They didn't even give me a chance.

Almost 7 years working together as equals and now he's my boss. Not only that, but I didn't even get a CHANCE to get that position. I don't know how this is going to work out. We'll see. I'm happy for him, but I'm a little miffed that they never even interviewed me for it at all.

I feel as manager, I'm the better fit. I've got better people skills. I personally think I do better work. The only difference is he's got a better education on paper and is older.

Do I have a right to be mad, or should I let it slide. I don't know.

I'd let it go if I were you. If you've been peers the entire time then it sounds like they pretty much had to pick either you or him. They obviously can't pick you both. And no offense, but if you were a better fit then wouldn't they have picked you? They must see something in him. Getting mad or complaining about it is just going to make you look bad.

If it really bothers you then you can ask them why they chose him. That way you know what you need to do to improve yourself. I think if you are mature as you think you are, then you wouldn't have problem with this. I had my best friend become my boss and also had junior coworkers get promoted instead of me and that's just the way life works sometimes. One day, it will be your turn. Keep your chin up and don't take life too seriously. It's just a job, there are more important things in life like family and your well being that means more.
