a4a
--"just answer this: why dont you want to be slender and physcally fit"-- Simple anser for you wich you will most likely ingore anyways 1st I am already physcally fit for some one of my size. Second I dont feel the need to change myself to fit in with what sociaity says is right. Even more so since what there baseing there ideas on is mostly empty sterio types and hatetred"--I did anser as you can see now if you dident want to hear my anser then thats your choise.. What does that mean and who said that? It sounds like someone saying " for a guy that smokes a pack a day he can still make it to the mailbox" Being overweight or obese is not a empty stereotype..... the reality is - not healthy. There is no hatred in saying your weight effects your oppurtunities, activities........ and it also does indeed effect the people that care about you. That is a fact not based on hate or fashion magazines.
hotgurl
Yes I can hike/walk I dont drive by choise and I walk every were I need to go. I can also run belive it or not!! No my joints do not hurt I take good care of myself meanning healthey diet and pleanty of activity. I can walk for 2 hours stright with out haveing to gasp for breath so you see not all overweight people are enahrrently unhealthey... If the bold statement is true than why are you 150 lbs overweight? If eating right and exercising are part of your daily routine you shouldn't be morbidly obese unless there is an underlying medical condition. And if that is the case perhaps you should take steps to fix the medical condition because being obese and ill is certainly not a good combo.

Mr. Lucky
I am belive it or not over weight people can be healthey and fit for there size. You know, living in Vegas, I see plenty of people go up against the house and play the odds every day. Hiking ability and 100 yard dash times aside, you cannot deny that your morbid obesity is a huge risk factor for coronary, pulmonary and chronic pain (arthritis, etc.) diseases. I got a first-hand glimpse of risk factors 5 years ago when a car hit me head on (our combined speeds were 90 mph) - I was in a low risk factor group (seat belt and airbag) and he was in a high risk factor group (older car, not wearing seatbelt). Under those circumstances, who would you rather be - me or him? Mr. Lucky

I have been to docs and they cannot find anything wrong with me. Thats because there is nothing wrong with me this is how and who I am as a person. Dosent mean I'm automatickly unhealthey quite the oppsiate I partisapated in sports in high school and all thu my 20s. I can run I can walk for miles and often do IE I do not drive by choise so you see I'm not unhealthey and cirtinaly not unhappy..
Author Blue Phoenix
Now far as the risk factors mr luckey I know you just mean well but think about it honeslty. I could be 105 pounds walk out my door and be hit by a car and killed. Life its self is a risk we take every day so no the idea of playing my odds dosent realy do it for me. We all play the odds every day in diffrent ways.. How about smokers there unhealthey what they do to there lungs is horrible but people dont pursicute them to the same extent they do over weight people.. You wanna know why because smoking isent a phiscial trait that you can see most of the time like being over weight is but yet its still verry unhealthy..

Here is what I don't get about eating. to maintain a weight if 250lbs at 5ft 5in you would need to eat 2500 calories a day. that's a lot more than double what I eat. And if you exercise you would need to eat more than that to maintain your weight. That a truckload of salad. Obviously your happy and thats fine. The math is just confusing me. stace79
I myself was 100 pounds overweight. I was unhappy, as I know you are, or you wouldn't be posting over and over on this thread. Your insecurity is a lot more transparent. I have lost 80 pounds, and I'm not to my "ideal" weight yet, but I am at least not considered obese anymore. I can walk a flight of stairs without huffing and puffing, I enjoy exercising and going to the beach. I don't feel completely mortified at the idea of wearing a swimsuit in public. I sleep better and my moods are better. So I know first hand the benefits of exercise and creating a healthier body. This is not about being fat or skinny, it's about being healthy or unhealthy. And if you are what is medically termed "obese," then you are unhealthy. Yes, it's a risk to just walk out your door every day, drive to work, or heck, even choosing to keep living is a risk. But there is no sense in adding to that. If you believe life is such a risk, then what's to stop everyone from just committing suicide? --"You aren't "living" with an extra 100, 200 or more pounds...you are just existing"-- Realy now who are you to judge me?? I'm not unhappy maybe you were when you were over weight hey its not for every one. Some cant handel being seen as diffrent in sociaity some can. And it dosent bother them you were one who couldent so you chose to change good for you more power to ya. I'm happy your happy with your new found weight loss but just because you were over weight at one point or another in YOUR life dosent mean you know what is going thu MY mind or how I feel about things. I will repeat myself yet again because it seams to get lost on every one who reads this thread or perhaps they feel the need to play counsler and decide that I started this thread for some sort of valadation wich I DID NOT!! I started this thread to express the idea that there are over weight people who belive it or not are happy with them selves. And that we are all not unhealthey witch I have even posted proof of and other posters have actualy agreed with me that.. OVER WEIGHT PEOPLE CAN BE HAPPY AND ARE NOT ALWAYS UNHEALTHEY go back and read a bit more and you will see there are a few others who back me in those ideas so no its not just little old me saying this.. You did how ever say something that makes sence --"its not about being fat or skinney its about being healthey"-- Yeep you nailed it right on the head you dont have to be skinney to be healthey thank you.. stace79
"Overweight" people can still be healthy. Obese people cannot. If you are 40 or 50 pounds or heavier than the weight deemed appropriate by medical professionals for your height, then you are NOT healthy. You are at higher risk for tons of medical problems.
hotgurl
Yes you can be healthy and OVERWEIGHT but being overweight is being like 20-30 pounds over you normal weight. anything over that is obese and that is NOT healthy esp if your morbidly obese.
Author Blue Phoenix
Also as a after thought if I was realy that inscure why on earth would I start a thread about obese people?? No I wouldent have I would have kept my mouth shut about being one here. I knew I wouldent be openly excepted I wasent expecting to be. Its not possible yet for obese people to be openly excepted around thin/avarage people there are still to maney sterio types and biggots for that to happen. If I wanted true valadation/exceptance I would have posted this on a bbw/larger person web page/message bord not a normal one.. So the valadation IE me looking for hopeing for exceptance thing is a bit week realy ..

Mr. Lucky
How about smokers there unhealthey what they do to there lungs is horrible but people dont pursicute them to the same extent they do over weight people.. You wanna know why because smoking isent a phiscial trait that you can see most of the time like being over weight is but yet its still verry unhealthy.. My point exactly. Smokers also assume huge risk factors for disease. You seem to be in denial about the fact that your weight puts you in the same category. Much like my accident, you don't get to choose when it happens - all you can do is take steps to minimize the risks. You seem extremely vested in not recognizing that... sb129
Glad its amuseing to you realy I am.. This hole thread is riddled with ingorance why not some more.. Yes it is. Mostly from you BP. I;'m sorry, but I cannot understand how hypocritical and obtuse you are being. WHAT was thepoint of starting this thread? You asked, you got. And you don't like. I said that I think its a sad comentary on sociaity that some one would think there over weight at a size 16. And it is sad that some one of that weight would have those feelings about it. Common you and me bouth know that most women today faint at the idea of ganing any weight at all .And you know why its because they are brainwashed that fat even an extra 10 pounds of it is horrible and disgusting. Why do you think so many poor women fall into the pit of eating disorders?? I think they would rather be dead then god forbid a bit over weight!! and that to me is sad.. I would NOT rather be dead than gain a LITTLE bit of weight. But I don't want to be obese.... it restricts your life in so many ways. The average size of a woman is about a UK14 (US12)... not stick thin,so people can't be being brainwashed.... As a4a says: well I don't think a person with a strong self esteem can be brainwashed by the media. where did you learn to spell BP? something I have wondered myself I've also struggled with dislexcia for the better part of my life I think im doing pretty good. Considering it use to take me a hour to write one sentence. So if people still want to judge me with out knowing me or my personal life story then so be it alpha thats there choise .. Most dyslexics actually know how to spell dyslexia. And ALL pcs have a spell checker.... BP, I am surprised to learn you are a woman, for some reason I always thought you were a guy. Anyway, you keep justifying things to yourself... I think the JAMA articles you are referring to are valid, but there are THOUSANDS of other peer reviewed, RCT based VERY CONCLUSIVE SCIENTIFIC articles, studies, etc etc out there that all conclude: OBESITY IS UNHEALTHY OBESITY IS A RISK FACTOR FOR MANY DISEASES nuff said. RecordProducer
What is this immediate link some of you are making between body size and happiness? Obesity is about health, aesthetics, and diminished physical activity. You're making philosophy out of it. Nobody said that skinny equals happy. Healthy and beautiful also doesn't equal happy. But you can't help but feel sorry for any disabled or defective person you see in the street - well, that's more or less how we see people who are very fat. We know their lives sometimes, because we've had friends or acquaintances who're fat and we know how lonely they are, how embarassed they are, how they never get compliments, and how "scary" they look. If we are ignorant about how wonderful it is to be fat, then you're definitely ignorant about how good it feels to be normal-sized, to wear sexy tops and tight jeans, and to worry about your 10 lbs you need to drop - not 110! To me, accepting to look like a giant matza ball is accepting to look retarded. And my dad is not morbidly obese but obese, ...eats as well as the next guy and is still overweight. And the next person is ultra-obese! Therefore I know BP is right: you can be overweight, happy and active. So you would absolutely encourage your children to be obese? But I think we are being sold the 'skinny is happy' myth.Absolutely not! Skinny or average or a few extra punds is NORMAL. Fat is abnormal, ugly, and unhealthy. Please tell me that fat is cute, sexy, healthy or adorable in any way! I don't know any fat celebrity who is a sex symbol. And no, Rosie or Oprah are not sex symbols. And that is why a lot of gorgeous, healthy women I know lapse into irrational thinking that being 10 pounds skinnier would improve their quality of life. It's certainly healthier than believing that piling 10 lbs of food in your stomach every day improves the quality of your life. I mean, c'mon, admit it, overweight people can't lose weight, because they can't give up the fattening food, not because they don't want to be thinner! On another note: The gay argument? I don't know who brought the gay comparison, but it's totally out of place. There's no connection whatsoever. Gay is OK. Fat is not OK. Some people want to look grotesque and collect applauses for that. I hope some day all the OW folks can gather in one state and admire each other without the ignorant thin people feeling sorry for them. I still hope that my mean comments will inspire someone to look in the mirror that they trashed long time ago and lose weight. Oprah even had a show about women who lost large amounts of weight and ended up with other problems: binge drinking, being addicted to sex w/ random strangers, drugs, etc. Most of the time, there are deeper problems that lie within... But being skinny isn't gonna fix em. The person needs to get to the root of the problem to actually "feel" better about themselves. I agree with this, but BP is trying to sell the theory that she is perfectly happy with her weight and if it weren't for us who are not fat, this world would have been a wonderful place to live in. But what made me mad inside was that most wouldn't even look twice at me when I was heavier, and suddenly I was "good enough", being skinnier. ... But I also want people to like me for me. And if they don't...I say screw them. Why is your appearence NOT YOU? Who is it? People are aesthetically oriented by nature, some more, some less. Would you live in an ugly house or drive an ugly car? Would you eat a burger that's torn apart and looks like a puke? Would you date someone who is completely unattractive to you? I would like to have a guy who would love me for my mind and soul solely, even if my face were asymetrical and my body weighed 300 lbs... but I don't think I would be attracted to that guy. Sorry to burst your sterio typical bubble but I am healthey I've even had doctors tell me this I've also had them tell me that much of the time most docs are blaming many unrelated health probs on obesity so you are WRONG on that one!! I'm verry healthey active and belive it or not well adjusted.. How old are you, BP? I know a person who drinks, does coke, and smokes regularly and is 50 years old. She is perfectly healthy - that still doesn't mean that doing drugs, drinking, and smoking are perfectly fine. Now no ones actualy ansered my one question do they think its right to put down or harass people based on the idea they may or may not be unhealthey??No one?!?!? I did and I think many people did - NO. it's not OK to harass anyone about anything, including obesity. But in this thread you ASKED for honest opinions about what we think of overweight people!!! If you ask everyone you know what they think HONESTLY and they give you honest answers, then they are not harassing you, but you're provoking them just to accuse them of harassing you. Is this another pattern of the self-punishment that obese people perform over themselves - you ask for insults so you can feel bad about yourself? BP, get help, both psychological and medical about your lifestyle. This is sincere advice. Too bad you don't appreciate it.
