I was in the advertising business for about two years total. Although I did administrative type of work, I was familiar with working with graphic designers/artists in the field. It's VERY stressful work because it's so competitive and cut-throat.

I am not too sure of your career intentions, but if you are looking to do some design work, I would advise you try an entry-level position as a Graphic Designer or even as an Assistant to the Graphic Designer. See what it's like first before you get thrown to the wolves. I do know that field is very tough and it's important you really discover you have true artistic talent and skill. Both are essential for that type of job.

One of my friends is a graphic designer and has been for years. She worked 10 years (directly out of college) for a company (not an ad agency though). She has unbelieveable (can't spell today!) artistic talent. She can literally capture the essence of anyone and create the most incredible sketch. She is also very skilled with the computer programs.

But if you have no substantial experience with graphic design or anything along those lines, once again, do not experiement if this is for you in an actual ad agency. Those places are brutal, and I've seen some of the most talented artists get dismissed from their jobs because their work did not "cut it".

Hope this helps! Best of luck!!!:)

Thanks for your reply, Napoleon. Actually, I am not a graphic designer and don't want to become one. I am interested in the creation of the idea, the marketing aspect, the creative concept that happens in the head before the design takes place. You post did help. Thanks. :)

I got to an advertising school to study graphic design...

What I've learned is that being able to b.s. people is more valuable than honesty. People love garbage like, no that's not green it's asparagus. Or things like, I chose to use horizontal lines to represent the stability of the company. Instead of saying, I used horizontal lines because they fit the format.

You can be the most creative person in the world... it takes one boss to put you in your place while taking the credit for something you came up with.

So glad I don't work with marketing "experts" anymore.

That certainly was useful, too. :) I was browsing web sites of advertising companies in my area. One of them caught my attention, because on the web site they presented videos of the managers talking about their lives and work. Not only did I read on another site that an expert advised them to include a "human" element on their web site to attract clients, but one of the owners stated he was a pilot! My husband is a pilot so he checked him up in a minute. Can you guess that he is NOT a pilot at all? (All pilots in the US owning a pilot's licence are registered at AOPA and information is available for everyone regarding their name and licence - Angelina Jolie and John Travolta are listed as well). That's when I realized that BS sells. I don't even know why he lied.

I see. But you get paid and you gain experience. People are sharks in all attractive areas. A doctor recently told me that the private practice is risky, because you need connections - doctors recommend each other and it's often not based (only) on quality. People are greedy bastards... what we we do? Join them or fight them. I usually fight them, which is a bad startegy apparently. Thanks for your advice, West. It was helpful. You all are helpful to me. :)

I don't even know why he lied.

Maybe his legal name is different than the one on the website.. or on the website he uses his middle name instead of his first name..

So.. it is possible that he didn't lie..

Many many people chuck their first name because it sounds awful and use their middle name in business.

I would think that a big wig at an ad agency wouldn't lie about something that any of his clients or people he knows would call him on..

Ad agencies aren't geared to lie to people.. that is your perception. they are geared to sell products to consumers and keep the competitive edge for the brands that hire them.

There are quite a few good agencies in Philly.. just like any metropolitan city..

Nah... he had a model airplane in front of him... I think that's what he "flies"... you know those remote control toys that fly like real? But the said "whatever his name - the pilot." It was double-sensed... but still BS.

then he was just advertising himself .. Ad agencies are notorious for using humor or double meanings in their webpages..

Why the distaste in Advertising ?.. When you sell yourself even in the music biz you have to push what sells.

Advertising has been around since the caveman days when they sold their wheels as round when they were really squares..
