Hey, my name is Brendan. I am 18 (as of yesterday :D)

And well, I have had this issue while trying to sleep for quite some time now and i have no idea what is the cause of this.

What happens is I can be lying in bed (my bed, girlfriends bed, lounge, even when trying to sleep at school last year on the table in the seats) and as I am lying there with my eyes close, and starting to doze off, I flinch and jump. All out of the blue. I have scared my girlfriend so many times. Its not a constant thing. It happens at random times while im trying to sleep (not every night). i jump and flinch. It even happened today at about 4:00pm I took a nap after a big party from last night (my birthday) and i jumped and swang my arms around as if trying to protect myself? Yet i was alone in my room.

Its starting to bug me. Is this normal? Or any ideas on what it could be?

There are LOTS of reasons this may be happening. Google "sudden jolt while sleeping" and be prepared to read the entire day.

My BF does that, but I don't think he notices it. He doesn't swing his arms around, to the extent it sounds like you do, but his body flinches a few times before he falls asleep. I used to do it when I was younger (like 5-13 that I remember). I had this feeling like I was falling a lot, just a sudden feeling, and my body would jump. My mom was sitting beside me one day when I was sick, and my body did it, and I asked her, she said it's just your brain's way of relaxing all of your muscles before you fall asleep. I have noticed like twice in the last year when my body does this, but mostly I don't...so maybe your body just "over relaxes" your muscles?

I hope this helped... :)
