Have you read any self-help books that have truly helped you? Care to share the title and author and the general idea of the book?

I am reading "How To Break Your Addiction To A Person." It is very interesting. The reason I am asking about the books is because I feel like my therapist isn't really helping. (Maybe I am expecting too much too soon). He is a great guy and I don't dislike him, I just feel like we really aren't getting anywhere. I don't want to substitute therapy with books, but maybe add some new books to read to my list. :)

Thanks!

I have alot of self -improvement books. The thing about these books are, they make you feel good inside momentarily. Usually after reading the book I never truly remember any of the tactics that are supposed to improve me.

Usually to be improved you have to practice each day of what your trying to improve. Gotta reorganize those thoughts and that isn't to easy to stick with.

I have read, 10 secrets every woman should know, why men love bitches, and another one but I really forget the title.

"People Skills" by Robert Bolton.

This book was written to help you assert yourself, listen to others, and resolve conflicts. Basically its for the shy type with no communication or listening skills.

As long as you have the want and desire to improve yourself, this book will do the trick.

The Power of Now - By Eckhart Tolle.

The Feeling Good Handbook - By David Burns.

You have to be in the right frame of mind, and be willing to DO the changes within, otherwise reading the books are pointless.

I have read many self-help books over the years, and as LaughingMachine said, most made me feel good, but I don't remember the tactics.

Having said that though, I can honestly say that when I found a book that applied to my current problem, I usually snapped out of the problem without applying all of the tactics. Just one or two was all I need. For me, simply seeing that I was normal...or shall I say, someone else had my problem...made me feel better and gave me hope and confidence that I could resolve the issue at hand. For instance, about four years ago, I had panic attacks. Simply discovering why and how to get around them helped. Was it a particular book? Not really.

My suggestion is for you to determine what your problem is, find a number of books that relate, and read them. Putting the many ideas and tactics together may be more helpful than sticking to one book.

Dr. Phil ~ Self Matters. It's an interactive book, you will have a lot of "homework". But once you take the time to answer all of the questions, you have learned a lot about yourself, and some of the reasons you act the way you do. It was very helpful, for me.

usually the only people these books help are the publisher and the author. the majority of them are a waste of time cause people read them but rarely follow the advice.

I read Awaken the Giant Within by Anthony Robbins. GREAT motivational book. It has changed my way of thinking and living my life and I really am

A LOT happier now. I immediately felt a change after reading the first chapter! It's as if he read my mind lol I still refer to it time and again when I am going through something. Since I have read it, My relationship is Wonderful in all aspects, I have a great new job, and my relationship with my brother is amazing! We went from him sending me to the hospital with a broken wrist to calling eachother everyday to say Hi and I love you. CRAZY!

I know it was not only the book..but it helped.

I also read The Art of Forgiveness; Lovingkindness and Peace by Jack Kornfield. Great for letting go of anger.

Next on the list is Fabulosity by Kimora Lee Simmons (just for fun lol )

If you can't help yourself first then how will a book do it? The only thing that has ever changed my life is me.

Growing up my mother worked two jobs and my dad was lost. I never had any direction. Only that of teachers and some friends. So in a way, reading these books was like having a guide that I never had before.

I know no one can change but you. I can't change me but me, but I needed some direction and guidance in order to change.

Good for you, EC! Sounds like you and I have lots in common. Self-help books certainly won't hurt, they can only help, right? :)

I read Your Best Life Now by Joel Osteen and enjoyed it, very motivating.

I am now reading Smart Love by Dr. Phil. I guess like the Self Matters book by another poster here, there is homework. So far I am enjoying it and can see where I need improvements.

I also want to read the Venus and Mars books by John Gray.
