I used to never let others cut or trim my hair because they always argued they "knew best" about how much to take off and whether to cut it wet or dry.

Almost always they were *wrong*.

After too many of those bad experiences with "knowlegeable professionals", my SO trims my hair (he offered one day, I accepted the risk).

And it turned out he's great at it!

It was an unexpected talent but, as I pointed out to him, " If it doesn't look right, you still have to be seen with me, so do a good job."

He's never failed to please (Smile) -in every aspect.

PG - I won't even trim my bangs, when I have bangs. I'm terrible at cutting hair.

RIO - Your SO is a natural talent. My son cuts his own hair, and often my other son's, but he mostly uses clippers and uses scissors on the top to create that "fade" thing that is popular with men/boys. He would probably make an excellent barber.

First, I would recommend discontinuing your practice of pulling the color/bleach all the way through the length of your hair. That is KILLING it. Roots only, feathering down a little to blend in - that should do the trick. The ends don't need repeated bleaching.

Secondly, I live and die by Kerastase Age Recharge. Here: http://www.amazon.com/Kerastase-Resistance-Recharge-Treatment-Masque/dp/B000B9RV0M

It's like a hair mask or something, comes in a green jar for about $40. I know, kinda pricey, but it's truly AMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAZING and smells sooooo good!! I am constantly changing my hair color, and this is the only stuff that protects it. I use it every Sunday night, and a jar lasts about 2.5-3 months. I literally LOVE it.

In addition, before getting my color done I use another product by Kerastase - it's these little tiny vials of intense conditioner. That helps prepare your hair for the damage.

I pretty much use all of their styling products too. My hair is pretty long too, so it's health is quite impressive...and I literally chalk it up to Kerastase stuff.

HTH!

I wonder if that shampoo has a toner built in that is slightly darkening the grays.

I'm not sure how it works, because there are products for Blondes and for Redheads ... I do know that it's got an incredibly rich moisturizing agent in it, so much so that really don't need to condition after awhile.

hmmm ... maybe we should be using photos of Breck Girls for our avatars on this one!

I'm usually hit or miss with my cuts, because I never seem to see the same person twice. And it's very hard to get them to understand that even though it's almost a "boy" cut, there is some fullness at the crown. The last girl I went to see did an incredible job, and it's looking great even though it's at a stage where I'd normally consider it "long." But, I made her give me her card, and she asked me to sign her little black book so that if she ever moved, she could let me know ... Smart girl!
