How to find motivation

Recommended Posts

Somehow I always seemed to lack major motivation. Every time when I wanted to do something, I couldn't do it. No matter how simple it was.

Just another teen

In my case, I usually use my envy or better yet 'competitive fire' to motivate me. What I mean is if I want to do something but lack the motivation to do it, all I need to do is ask myself this question: "Others have no problem doing it, why can't I?" and immediately I get motivated. Now I do not know the things which you lack the motivation to perform, but in my case this style of motivating oneself is used when I am feeling lazy that I would forgo my homework and studies.

Yup.... I am in the same boat as you. I can't do simple tasks and if I do, they never get completed. I think motivation comes from within, or maybe it is something we can trick ourselves in believing. Who the hell knows. Do you find that you suffer from depression? I know my lack of motivation is somewhat due to depression and lack of rest. Maybe if you set goals for yourself and once you complete something from your list, you can REWARD yourself. But whatever you have to do, has to get done before recieving the reward.

Awhile back I went to a depression group, and one thing they talked about was people who have depression, have lack of motivation, but also don't reward themselves as far as completing things that need to be completed. REWARD yourself, if you complete little tasks, and all of a sudden the motivation thing will probubly happen more because you know if you do something, you will get the reward. Good luck and hope this helps.

Break it down into little itty bitty steps. Do one. Then another. Then another. Eventually, you get where you want to go.

I was recently given the same advice. After moving, I was so tired of the moving and having packed that I had no motivation to start the unpacking, seeing the stacks of boxes. My friends told me to do it a little at a time. I thought that would not work and I'd do too little and had to do it all at once so still felt overwhelemd.

I finally tried out the advice. I gave myself an easy target but told myself to remain consistent. I said just 2 boxes/day. Before I knew it I was doing more than twice the amount and I finished in no time. I fooled myself to think I only need to do 2 which seemed simple and I wanted to get out of the way, but once you START, the motivation kicks in. Same with diet and exercise and everything else if you apply this rule.

Or if there's a long technical book I have to read, it'll sit and collect dust until I make a plan to read only 10 pages/day. Befor I know it I will be voluntarily reading much more than that like a regular book. If you don't trick yourself into starting, the motivation doesn't just pop into you from thin air.

I've even been really lazy to do a load of laundry. I'd tell myself just load it into the machine then tomorrow I can let it run. But once I start I usually finish the entire task :)

Motivation is little steps, don't set huge goals you'll never reach. Never put anything off, start something then finish it no matter what. However, if you lack motivation for even the simplest tasks, like doing the dishes, then you need more help than you can find here.
