playing the wingman?

Recommended Posts

I'm going to help one of my friends and be a wingman at a upcoming event. This normally isn't a big deal, been there done that, except this time, I'm wingman for a woman.

For a guy, having women around him actually gets him more attention. And I appreciate the help that my wingwomen friends have given me in the past. But for a woman, having a guy around will just block off the decent ones. For example, if we walk around together at this event and meet people, and she introduces me as her "friend" which is true, but also ambiguous, it may give the wrong impression. And going too much into detail like this is my friend -- the non-naked-stuff type friend, will probably come off as weird.

So I'm thinking I should be introduced as her old friend from college, that might be better since it gives the impression that we've known each other for a while, so it's more possible that we are just hanging out just to hang out. Also I think once we get to the event, we need to split up. I'll strike up conversation with guys and then bring them to her.

Whatever. She's a friend I've known for like 12 years so I want to help her. Corny to you maybe because you don't care about anyone enough to try to help them. But that's your problem.

I got sick anyway and I couldn't make the event. I'll help her next time.

Oh yeah, I forgot, typing your statement in all caps makes it more powerful. You win, I suxor!!!!1!!

I don't give a lot of attention to "Guest" posts most of the time - anyone who can't even give themselves some kind of identity within an anonymous community like this one is probably only looking to do a hit-and-run...

Interesting question (not corny, and I do comprende...) I'm not clear - are you really an old college friend, or would that be a fabrication? I'm in favor of sticking with the truth, as that way you don't have to go around remembering all the various stories you've told in your life, in case they ever come up again. So if that's really the truth, I think it would be worth going with that. She could even add something like "I didn't have a date for tonight, and he was gracious enough to agree to join me," if she really wants to make her availability clear. (Or you could use a modification of that line if you don't go with the college thing: "...an old friend, and since I didn't have a date for tonight, he agreed...") Either way, it kind of makes it clear that she isn't attached, either to you or anyone else.

It sounds like you are sensitive to "staying out of her way" - that's cool of you. Have you ever had feelings for her? Is this really completely altruistic on your part? I'm not challenging you, I'm just curious.

What type of event was it, and did you hear whether she came away with any interested men, even without you there? I"m sorry you missed it, I would have liked to hear how you did...
