sb129
The other night I watched the BBS Panorama programme where BBC journalist John Sweeney investigates Scientology in the US. The prog has been made famous because Mr Sweeney totally lost his rag at Scientology Church rep Tommy Davis on camera. After watching the programme, i can see why Mr Sweeney got so angry with Tommy Davis. I would have slapped the little upstart alot earlier. A journalists job is to present the facts from both sides of the story. Tommy Davis stalked Mr Sweeney, every time Mr Sweeney wanted to talk to an EX-scientologist, or used the word "cult" Tommy went mental, shouting and saying this person or that person (non believers) were not to be believed because of their dodgy pasts. (some of them had even had posters placed around their own towns denouncing them because they were not scientology supporters) Mr Sweeney was followed, intimidated and bullied and accused of "not being objective" in other words, not taking everything the scientologists said as the truth. he interviewed celeb scientologists, who then withdrew their permission to show the interviews. I can see why the guy got so frustrated after a week of Tommy Davis' jumped up arrogant "We ARE right, and anyone who says otherwise is in big trouble" routine. This religion is SCARY. Aside from the fact that it is based on the totally crackpot writings of a whacko science fiction writer, They think its OK for members to cut themselves off from their familes. They think its OK to publicy humiliate people who decide to leave the church, or those who speak out about it. They think its OK (and their doctrine states it) to use bullying, intimidating tactics to scare people into thinking their way (or into keeping quiet if they don't). They think its OK to insult the Holocaust by saying that Psychiatry is the reason behind it. They think mental illness is a myth. They prey on vulnerable people, and take THEIR MONEY. Interestingly, the higher up in the church you are seems to be directly proportionate to how much money you have given it. The Uk won't recognise the church of scientology as a religion, as an application for it to become a registered charity was rejected on the grounds "the Commission has concluded that Scientology does not operate for the "public benefit". I cannot believe in this day and age so many prominent people are buying into the BS that is Scientology. It is scary.
VinaAmez
I actually spent time one day looking that stuff up and honestly I can't understand how someone can believe in it. I really can't. In order to believe in it there's that story you have to believe first and it's just soooooooooo stupid. I mean come on. People believe in anything now a days.

Mustang Sally
Gee a religion based on wierd unbelievable stories! I'm shocked! :lmao: :lmao: Point taken, Topper! Just goes to show you that people will go to great lengths and suspend their disbelief in amazing ways in order to fill a void in their lives...
Author sb129
Gee a religion based on wierd unbelievable stories! I'm shocked! Yeah I Know.... they all are. But this is particularly odd. And its the attitudes and tactics of the followers that I am interested in rather than what they actually believe. I doubt any Scientologist would "lower" themselves to justifying it to me on here anyway.

alphamale
I cannot believe in this day and age so many prominent people are buying into the BS that is Scientology. It is scary. Hmmm thats also what Martin Luther was saying about the Catholic Church before he started the protestant movement in the 1500s.
Island Girl
It IS made up. Just between you and me. But there really are people who believe it. Trust me. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes John Travolta and Kelly Preston Jason Lee and his wife Isaac Hayes and his wife Juliet Lewis David and Victoria Beckham the list goes on... There is a HILARIOUS South Park episode about it that Tom Cruise tried to ban and Isaac Hayes left the show over. Here's a link --- it is really hard to find on the internet but well worth watching it... http://www.scientomogy.com/southpark_scientology.php It explains exactly what they believe and how they get people sucked in. Of course anyone with a brain would see through it. But then again I feel that way about religion in general...
Island Girl
And if you want to read the really scary side of Scientology do a web search of the name Lisa McPherson.
Author sb129
David and Victoria Beckham Pending. Tom is nervous about Katie hanging around them cos they AREN'T scientologists. Yet. But then again I feel that way about religion in general... Me too. That southpark episode is fantastic. I am disappointed in Jason Lee. Another one of my teenage fantasies relegated then. Moai
Scientology is very dangerous. If you really dig into it, you can find their documents on how to deal with people who discredit them, etc. Lying, frivolous lawsuits, blackmail, threats of violence, all are deemed ok as tactics to use against unbelievers. Sounds familiar... Where I live they have a pretty big church, if you can call it that. It says "Church of Religious Science" on the sign out front. It gives me the creeps every time I drive by it. I imagine their minions streaming out of the doors like roaches, ready to disrupt and destroy the lives of the unsuspecting townspeople. Scientology is banned in Germany. I think that's awesome, and it pisses John Travolta off. I saw an interview where he said that the German ruling goes against the First Amendment, and that makes it wrong. The idiot doesn't know that the First Amendment only means something within the borders of the US! Look up "Battlefield Earth" and read the letters that were sent out to Scientologists about going to see the movie. Hilarious. Also, I don't think that celebrities get the same version of Scientology that average Joes get. Cruise and Travolta do, but I think the average celeb enjoys the Celebrity Center and all that, and they are treated like they are special while there. I doubt that there is a Scientologist on this board, as they put their numbers at 500,000, but real estimates put their numbers at around a third of that. So the law of averages would suggest there isn't one here. Yet again, wackos thrive because of the lack of critical thinking skills amongst the populace. Here is a great website about these so-and-sos. http://www.xenu.net/ Read all about how we evolved from clams, Xenu, and thetans! I also don't think that their beliefs are really any weirder than mainstream religions. Think about it. And there is just as much evidence for Xenu as their is all the others, namely none. Slays me. Mustang Sally
Yet again, wackos thrive because of the lack of critical thinking skills amongst the populace. Well stated. Isn't it a sad commentary that these celebs make f*cking millions of dollars and this is what they do with their (lack of) brain power??? I wouldn't drink any of the kool-aid when amongst these folks, if you know what I mean....

a4a
Wait a minute ...... now I just got a transmission via the mothership that George Bush is the reincarnated Xenu....... I am a level 18 Thetian Babbler. My rocket powerd DC8 is buried in the mountain behind my home...... we will soar to the heavens soon and John Travolta will be our personal pilot. Send me a check or feel the wrath of Xenu!
VinaAmez
LOL!!! I think it's safe to say IMO that people have lost their minds if they believe the story of Xenu.
Moai
Most Scientologists don't know about Xenu. They are taught that if they learn something within their cult too soon it will kill them. Literally. From the Operation:Clambake website, there is a link to a French documentary that shows Scientologists having an information fair in Paris. One young member is talking to a non-member, and then her handler comes over and shuts her up. Scary.
