che_jesse
Ok so I've been wondering about this for a while. I always hear about people takeing Oxycontin to get high. Ok I thought to myself, whatever. I dont take anything so I would not know about its affects. But my father recently died of cancer, in the 8 month fight he had with pancreatic cancer he got perscribed more oxycotin and oxycodone then I could ever imagine. He would tell me over and over that he REALLY does not see what people get out of it, all it ever did for my dad was make him go to sleep. I'm not going to experiment with it to find out but can someone that has taken this stuff to get high explain to me what exactly is it that people get out of it?
norajane
From the Partnership for a Drug-Free America website: As pain medication, OxyContin is taken every 12 hours because the tablets contain a controlled, time-release formulation of the medication. Most pain medications must be taken every three to six hours. Oxycontin abusers remove the sustained-release coating to get a rapid release of the medication, causing a rush of euphoria similar to heroin.
Author che_jesse
My dad had both the extened release type and the fast acting type that he was supposed to take when the pain was just to much. Neither did anything for him. I thought the same thing at first, that they were just doing what you posted but since he did not get anything out of the fast acting kind then there has to be more to it? Its effects are probably different when you are actually in pain. And, it's possible that the fast acting kind is still different from removing the time-release coating and sucking down a whole bunch of those tablets. Plus, it can be taken intravenously, or injected in the anus for faster absorption. People wouldn't be stealing it if it put them to sleep - they get a rush, no doubt. Diamonds&Rust
I'm not going to experiment with it to find out but can someone that has taken this stuff to get high explain to me what exactly is it that people get out of it? When someone actually in pain takes pain medication in recommended doses with the recommended route of administration, of course they won't feel euphoria. Whenever people take pharmaceuticals to get high, it's never taken as directed. Most snort it, or at least take a bunch. As for the rush, it's extremely pleasurable when abused properly. It's just a matter of removing the protective coating, removing the extended-release gel ball inside, and snorting. Snorting an entire 80 mg pill is overdose territory, about 1/4 of that will do one just fine. Oxycontin is an opiate, more potent than morphine. Many drug users dislike opiates for the same reason as your dad, basically--it takes a certain kind of person to get into them.
