The Original Poster
There are some very insightful people here who might be able to help me figure this out. Why is it that you have to love yourself in order to find love from others?
beautifulearth83
Well first off, loving yourself means many things. It means taking care of yourself, doing what you feel and following your heart. When you do so, you bring yourself to a frequency that allows more good connections and healthy experiences. When you do the opposite, it creates resistance. Yet, sometimes that yields interesting connections with those alike to your lower frequency. Not always healthy, though. Do you ever notice how when for instance a person has a mate, and suddenly there is more attention and opportunities from the opposite sex? That is because that person's heart is open and their confidence is active, therefore they have a stronger signal to communicate love with. Just some ideas, hope they help. lonelybird
I found when I don't love or respect myself, I don't know how to love and respect others. Our heart is like a container. If our heart is full of love and overflow, you want to give others love; if you don't give, you feel not satisfied If our heart very lack of love, we are hunger for love, we tend to find love from outside, we tend to be needy and clingy, we can grab anything that seem can give us love, which is not healthy Only God can give that kind of unconditional love, when you connect with God, you can feel God's love for you, the love overflow that you want to show others. God's love is the very base and source for any successful relationships, like a living spring. If you cut off the spring, all unhealthy things and struggle come.
9Lives
You will be much happier if you learn to love yourself. I know. I had to do the same thing and your world changes when you do. That's a promise. SELF LOVE The best thing for you. I read this book called self worth that helped me. It was kinda slow but once I took my time...It got better. You can find other books but DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND LEARN TO LOVE YOU.
Trialbyfire
It's all about core honesty. If you practice being true to oneself, feeling positive and respecting yourself, you will find your own happiness which allows you to treat others better. There's no need to selfishly hoard those good feelings anymore to keep yourself happy.

What if being true to yourself means wanting to place a golden denarii over each eye and chase a full prescription bottle with 750 ml of Absolut ?

That's escapism instead of truth. Being true to yourself is saying, okay, what do I need to do to make my life real? Honesty with myself and honest relationships.

I need a vacation from myself. Seriously.

pelagicsands
I need a vacation from myself. Seriously. That's pretty melodramatic, dude. You just need to try something different... to blow away the cobwebs, so to speak. Have you considered indulging in anal sex? It can give you a whole new perspective on life. Trust me. Storyrider
don't you ever see the Latins dancing in the streets all the time? So that is why the Brazilians like to do that line dance! That was going to be Roosevelt's next line: "A chicken in every pot; a hand on every butt." Are you sceptical about bouncy things? Not at all. I have the Jewish version, but I don't think it is quite up to par with J-Lo's. To post on topic, I think the self esteem concept is a byproduct of the 70s and a bit overrated. To paraphrase TBF, do something you can be proud of and the love will come.

pelagicsands
Okay Mr. Down on Life...Please don't sling your slime at me. He has a strange way of expressing himself. I think what he meant to say was that he wishes he could have been there for you, to help you through it. A lot of people here have a special place for you in their hearts.
