I need to get two root canals. One is for the tooth right next to the front one and the other is for a back molar.

Problem is that I have huge anxiety problem and I am extremely clausthropobic.

Please tell me it is not that bad!!!

Any good experiences?

In the last 2 months I have had 3.. All back molars from huge cavities that were filled 30 years ago.. one tooth even cracked first..

The rule of thumb is that if the tooth hurts before the RC then the chances are higher that it will hurt after.

Root canals are a walk in the park.. the toughest part is holding your mouth open for so long that your muscles hurt..

2 of mine had to be done in 2 visits each but one of them from a cracked tooth was able to be done in 1 visit..

The caps hurt some on me though when those were done.. but it was more in the injection site from the numbing agent.

you will breeze right thru.. it is more discomfort than pain..and they can give you good drugs like vicodin if you are in pain :)

I know exactly how you feel and remember, I suffer from anxiety as well...SO, talk to your dentist and get a referral to a dentist that specializes in patients with anxiety issues...

I have to have 2 root canals, and about 3 or 4 cavities that have to be worked on as well, I decided to be put out for the procedure. I go May 31 for the consultation, then I'll find out more info about me being put out and having all the work done. For me, it's easier to do, I do not want to be awake and suffer in the chair with anxiety attacks!

Hope this helps, and just know MANY people have dental fears! You're not alone!

No you're not.. I waited wayyyy to long to go to the dentist because of the fear of the pain... but once I went there and went thru it I felt like an idiot for putting it off for so long because the fear was unfounded.

Thanks for the replies!

I am definitely too scared to be put out. I guess it's a control issue...

You guys made me feel better! Thanks!

I'm scared to be put out as well, but for me, it's the less of the two evils... I'll be getting ALL the work done at once! It's like starting from scratch! And, I'll be going to the dentist for teeth cleanings and xrays on a more regular basis.

I still am scared though!

Glad you feel better.

I had always heard horror stories about root canals and pain. Now I've had two or three and NONE were bad or painful. the first one was such relief because I had let an abcess (sp?) go to the point I was in serious pain. I felt MUCH better afterwards. The other one or two was/were also a walk in the park. I don't really know what all the hullaballoo was about.

Many dentists offer that gas (nitrous oxide?) that really helps with anxiety, or maybe your dentist would prescribe a valium to be taken one hour before the procedure. Mine did when I had gum surgery. I was so relaxed they had to keep waking me up!

OOOH!!! The pain medication is so dreamy!!!!

I have a question...it's related to the thread but not exactly...

My BF is going through tough dental work right now. No root canals but fillings...eight of them. And they tried to repair one of his wisdom teeth but now it needs to be pulled because the cavity is too big.

Anyone know if kissing him can give me a cavity?

You're so cute!

No, you can't get a cavity from kissing him.

Thank you so much! I was a little bit afraid that the germs would spread but now I feel better.

I am not a dentist. :) I don't think you can get a cavity, but with so much decay, he may have bad breath.

He says he has a really nasty taste in the back of his mouth from the wisdom tooth. I don't put my tongue back there. He only has that cavity and one more up front to be worked on. But today the dentist got the decay off of the wisdom tooth and then struck a nerve and now says it needs to be pulled after he said he could save it.

My BF won't do needles so he's in a world of pain right now he says. He said the dentist hit the nerve three times.

I wonder why he still has his wisdom teeth? Most people get them pulled when they're younger or when they first appear. Wisdom teeth are useless!

He needs to get that one pulled and the one on the same side pulled now on the bottom. Because the dentist said he can't reach to clean them. But his other side is fine.

I guess he has a big jaw. I had mine pulled my senior year in high school because I have an average jaw with big teeth. :D

I think you're cute too Whichy-poo. Oh and my BF has a shower on a hose! I just realized that the other day. :D:bunny::D

Dental medicine has changed a lot since my last root canals, but waaay back when (probably 30 years ago) I asked for a mirror so I could watch what he was doing (it was a back molar) and he showed me the bits he used and told me step-by-step what he was doing. It was fascinating and actually tickled a bit when he was filing. I also have five roots on my back teeth so it took longer. Yes, I know - I'm weird, but the dentist is hilarious! Now, if they could put me under for the gyno visits I'd be OK. I have the anxiety for that and not the dentist but I do understand what you are feeling. With the meds they have today you will be fine.

If you get the right dentist, they are a piece of cake. Ask around for references from people you know. I've had several root canals from one particular dentist in my city and I just about fell asleep. In the old days they were a bit painful but these days the procedure has been perfected to the point where you don't even know it's happening.
