Approximately once a month I get a crick in my neck that is almost debilitating. This time it's in my rear shoulder/trap area, and I cannot even lift my arm or bend over, it hurts!!!! WHY do these things happen, and what can I do to ease them??

I'm tempted to go get a massage tonight, but worry about exacerbating it.

Sounds like you have got really bad muscle tension, and massage will help it rather than exacerbate it, but you need really deep tissue massage to help release the muscle fibres.

Because of my job, I get twice monthly remedial massage to work out the knots in my neck and upper back.

It HURTS, but it is worth it, because the next day it is so much looser and more flexible- it keeps me pain free for longer too.

You also sound like you may have a trapped nerve. A physiotherapist assessment is your best bet...

Do you grind your teeth? I do when I am stressed and I think I remember you having TMJ pain earlier this year which could be related?

And I know you have had some stress lately...

I have really, really tight shoulders/upper back muscles - I carry all of my tension there, and my big boobs don't help matters. And yeah, I also have TMJ and have....um....been a little stressed as of late.

I had totally forgotten about massages! I joined this massage place that has a montly membership dealy-bob so I could get two massages a month. Thing is, I haven't been since March. I get the deep tissue massage - it hurts BAD, but I do feel much better afterward.

I just called, and they can't get me in until tomorrow. :(

Better than nothing.

Mine sometimes gets so bad I get headaches. you can get some painkillers that have a mild muscle relaxant in them. Give me a minute and i will see if i can find out what they are called in the US.

Also, sitting like that with your head thrown back in a sultry pose won't help!;)

Doxylamine succinateYou need a painkiller with this in it. Its mildly sedative as well as being a muscle relaxant. If you get it in a preparation with paracetamol, caffeine (helps absorb the drug quicker) and codeine phosphate its pretty good for muscle tension pain.
