Agent M
Any advice? I have had a swollen tongue off and on for a few years, sometimes lasting up to a year. I have brought this to the attention of many a primary care doctor, an endocrinologist, and a dentist. Nobody knows what to tell me. Now and then, my upper lip will swell, and I also commonly have sore and swollen gums in the front and behind the front teeth toward the roof of my mouth. I have considered different food allergies (milk, eggs, citrus..) but none really coincide with the onset of symptoms. Any ideas or web sites to offer??
SOS_Please
Hello! Well, I have had the same problem. Though it very well could be food allergies, it can also be that you are lacking certain nutriants (so I've been told). Being stressed out can also cause certain unexplainable phenomena to occur (my mouth and tongue always freak out on me when I am stressed). Do you smoke, or chew, or do something else that may aggrevate your mouth? Maybe you eat spicey foods, or chew hot gum, etc.?
norajane
Well, I googled swollen tongue and came up with a couple sites that discussed symptoms of vitamin B2 (riboflavin) deficiencies, among others. How's your riboflavin intake these days? Other vitamin deficiencies? Maybe you should ask a doc to do some blood work and figure out if you are deficient in some vitamins or minerals (or have too much of something).
Tony T
Go here: http://www.cureresearch.com/sym/swollen_tongue.htm If you don't find your answer there, just Google "swollen tongue". There are hundreds of excellent sites that offer great insight. If I had a problem like that, I would go to the best diagnostic clinic closest to me and I wouldn't leave the building until I was diagnosed and cured. Nowadays, things like this can be caused by something as simple as stress or as complicated as dust dropped by aliens in the middle of the night...and just about everything in between. But on the WWW, somebody, somewhere in the world will have the answer.
Author Agent M
Thanks all for your great answers! I did find out that I am deficient in some nutrients, although all blood test came out in the normal ranges. I am now eating a lot more. Also, I noticed as the weather gets more humid the problem seems to go away...and the whole thing coincides with dry sinuses (due to dry weather). Hopefully I have my answers. Thanks!
