what to pursue- career wise. no more dead beat job for me. have to go back to school"

Recommended Posts

what do u guys think of pursuing another 2 yrs and obtaining a degree in business(bba, accounting degree).i already done my first 2 yrs. i have a diploma. i be taking it at langara. do you guys think a degree from a community college is worth pursuing. pursuing i mean, do you guys think employers would hire a langara degree grad. would i find work related to my field. would the extra 2 yrs -obtaining a degree be that much of a difference in getting a job related to business field and not getting a job in the business field.

its either that or get into the trades at bcit. trades meaning goin into plumbing. my folks are very keen and want me to get into plumbing. why? one can work as a independent contrator and charge a so called rate and make all the money. hes is ones own boss. so he pockets all the money.

myself i'm not realli into plumbing as i never been exposed to it , other than working along my dad with household leaks, plug ins and repairs. he borrows the books from library and fixs it himself. he says going into plumbing is a very very simple trade and easy to do. is it really.

other than plumbing what is a good trade. i want something that isn't heavy, or involves too heavy lifting. i'm only 5 7 145lbs.

is it true that if you go into a trade , one is pretty much guranteed a job. while going to univiesity and getting a degree is somewhat shaky and depending on what you major in? i knew 2 ppl who majored in sci at ubc ,but are working retail. hmm but its just them. is it a common thing?

i have to make up my mind. my folks are bugging me to go back to school. i'm not reallu even sure about what to take. i haven't worked for so long either too. but the thing is i'm in my mid 20's and i still have no career job. i am worked in temp jobs as a warehouse worker, merchandiser, call centre agent, data entry clerk and also permament jobs as a call centre agent too. they were pretty much dead beat and dead end jobs. and they paid anywhere from 9-13/hr which isn't much to me.most were 9/hr.

i finished my 2 yr diploma , but can'r find a business related job. applied ,but no one ever phones and interviews me, or even anything back. i get call backs from the dead end job ya.

i took computer tech 1 yr program before, but when i wrote the test, i hardly knew what the terms and ways of troubleshooting the pcs where.i guess i failed , and was never given an interview.i also had a hard time trying to fix computers (at practicum) , be it they lsot the operstaing system,or anything technical. they didn't even teach us this real life problems in computer school in the whole 1 yr i was there. i lost my confidence in computers so that was why i go into business.

not sure what to take plumbing/trades or any trade or go back and do 2 yrs and get a degree in business. i have not much time left. i don't even really want to go back to school . why my age and but i have to since i can't get a good decent job, but the dead beat jobs i mentioned above.

I would look into taking an aptitude test. These test are designed to find out what type of career would be right for you. Most Jr Collages would have a career center where you could take the test.

If you like working with your hands and don't mind getting dirty You might be happy in one of the trades. Personally I think working in Plumbing and or being an electrician is a great way to go. Heating and Air conditioning is a very in demand profession. Welding and pipe fitting are also not a bad choice.

Some people might make jokes about those that work with their hands they might even look down on a you. A good Plumber can make a great living. Many make well over $100,000 a year.

Dear Joel,

I do believe this particular forum is for those who want to discuss topics related to dating. In order to get as much feedback as possible, a more career oriented forum might suit you better.

Agreed. A lot of skilled trades people earn a lot of money.

If its something you are passionate about go for it.

A degree in something you won't be passionate about might become useless when you find you are just as unhappy in that career. KWIM

I know it can be hard to decide what to do.

But its possilbe to go back.

My aunt went back in her 30s and got a bachelor in nursing. She is now in 50s and thinking or or already did go back to go for a masters. ;)

I too have gone back to school at 27. I'm going for a certificate program at a "trade" school but its only the start and will be a cheaper way to be sure of my passion of medicine and to assure myself the time and $$$ spent going for nursing and medical school would be worth it. :);)

As long as I could remember, I have wanted to be a Dr. and now I'm finally going for it even if its a long road. The certificate will help me provide the living my daughter deserves in the mean time.

I wanted to add that money isn't everything either. IF you are passionate you will take less money and get by and be happy still the same. ;)

That said I'm with you on the crum jobs available for those without degrees. I'm sick of busting my chops for some unappreciative companies and "persons"(when its been small companies) for practically nothing.

I will say right now I'm making $9/hr and its not enough to even rent an apartment for my daughter and I and we have had to stay with my mom. I guess it has sure motivated me to get my education rolling again FINALLY!!! I have 2 years in at a community college but I went for a change of degree programs there and now my classes are done for something I don't want to do anymore. :(

IMUSTBEAFOOL

at some point and i have always been a supporter of higher education. in fact when we were living together we talked alot about that, her staying home and going to uni while i worked - she felt i would resent her for that and i had to remind her over and over again that if somehting is important to her its important to me - i think because of her past she couldn't believe someone she was with would do such a thing. she never did that while we were together but i am sure she still holds that dream and my offer has never changed. :D:confused:
