joel Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- u guys ever notice ppl make first impressions just based on the way you look. like for example in HS , since i wore thick glasses, parted my hair, had messy hair, dressed in older style and non trendy looking clothes, very quiet shy and loner type of guy. well i was labelled as a nerd.he proably plays a lot of vid games, doesn;t go clubbing, studys a lot and does very well in school, has no social life, and we ll ya a guy who did really good in school. i even had one guy said oh it thought you were smart(meaning got high marks and new what he was doing. computers wise since we were in a computer class. i said why , and he said b/c u have soooo thick glasses. funny thing is i do study hard and do my homework , but by no way am i a nerd. i don;t get high marks, i get avg and sometimes above avg. i'm not academically good at school. i even had a super hard time with basic visual basic 6.0 programming. i thought i even failed it, always got syntax error, logical error. ah hated it. only got a C. some ppl get it and didn;t even come on friday-optinonal day, but i came in every friday , b/c i needed to. networking was hard to with novell 4.11 -had to do with rights and creating users and giving them certain rights and limiting certain users. its was confusing. any of u guys here ever been stereotyped or have stereotyped a certain person based on looks and first impressions(be it nerdy and a smart guy, gangster, emo, preppy...etc) and if so- what was it and what drew that fact/ part into basing it onto that person. looking at my pic what do u guys think on my looks -first impressions. geeky, gangster-guess not, vid gamer nerd, avg looking , sweet talking player . lol http://www.plentyoffish.com/member3413289.htm

Steveto Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 Oh ya.. I'm asian. I sucked at math, no exaggeration. I was permanently banned from all computer rooms because every time I touched one, it would crash. The only thing I could say about myself is that I was consistant at being horrible at arithmetic. The funny thing was, that my average would be 56%ish on most of my tests/exams. It wouldn't matter if it was the easiest test or the most difficult..I would get the SAME damn grade. I liked difficult tests because it made me look smart because half the class failed and I didn't haha. I still took it in university too..why, I have no idea. Only for first year though. After that I needed to take classes that I actually got decent grades in or I wouldn't be there for long. I was "THE" Class Clown.
blue16 Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 You seem like a fairly average looking dude - which is totally fine. What you say about stereotypes is totally true. People will see you and make tons of little judgments and opinions about you based on looks and looks alone. I'm sure you do it a too. You see a girl and immediately you put labels on her...such as "bitch" "nice girl" "mean" "party girl" "nerd" etc. Everyone does it. I too feel that people get the impression that I am an innocent/nice guy strictly based on my appearance. But from what I've learned, the way you present yourself is much more important. This guy I work with, when i first met him I thought he looked like a nice/slightly dorky guy. After getting to know him and hear stories and all of that, I realized that he wasn't what I thought at all. While he is a very nice guy, he is not a dork at all and is a player/partier and is very popular. Not what I expected at all. My first impression based on his looks was the exact opposite of what he actually is. The point is that all that matters is how you present yourself. If you're a confident outgoing guy who likes to party, people are going to see that regardless of what you look like. If you see yourself as more of a quiet type, then you're going to act like that and it will show in the way you present yourself.

If you don't talk to anyone and keep to yourself, the only thing people have to go off of is your appearance. If you want people to think differently of you, I would try putting yourself out there a little bit and getting to know people. Otherwise, don't let people's narrow minded opinions get to you!
VanFX Posted July 1, 2007 Posted July 1, 2007 Hey Joel I know exactly what u mean. The difference is I was on the opposite side. Everybody assumed since I played sports, worked out and looked "stylish" that I was a dick and wouldn't be very intelligent. In reality I was at the top of the class, was friends with anybody that was nice and genuine, and didn't care much about what anybody else thought. I guess my point is that I hope you feel at least a little better knowing that it doesn't just happen to the guys that people assume are nerdy or dorky (they assumed I was a meat-head, lol). As stated before, the best we can do is realize that we're better people because of it and be happy to let people see who we really are. Hopefully by doing so we can open the eyes of many people and make them better people as a result of it. Who knows, maybe we will save somebody else from having the annoying and frustrating feelings of this happening to them by showing others there is more to a person than what meets the eye. I'm 24 and am a Software Engineer now, I still experience these types of things when I meet with new clients or co-workers and these people are grown adults! They assume since I'm young, I'm dumb...
