Flossing: Do you really do it?

How often do you really do it? Be honest.

At times, particularly if a special occasion is coming up, or I am trying to turn over a new leaf, I floss every night. I am currently on a pro-flossing jag.

Other times I fall off the wagon and could go a week or two without, until I eat corn on the cob or something that I just can't live with in my teeth.

EVERYDAY, except when I run out and I am too lazy to buy more, like now.:o

Seriously though, ever since my last cleaning and I saw just how much gunk that they cleaned out from between my teeth, I have done it everyday since. Before then, almost never.

I would imagine that is a must for you, PA.

I always wonder about all the stuff people are supposed to do according to the powers that be, whether they actually really do them, or whether they are like me and only achieve them on a good day/good week.

Like changing all the bed sheets once a week, changing the filter on the Brita pitcher at the right time, dusting the furniture, flossing, mowing the lawn, trimming the hedges, sending thank you notes in a timely fashion, calling Grandma.

So much stuff. Easy to fall behind.

Twice a day, I also have those dental scraping tools, but I can be a bit obsessive.

I floss every night. As per my dentist, if you floss too much, it's also not beneficial and can be detrimental to your gums. And yes, I'm guilty of skipping the odd night, if I'm too tired. :p

It is weird.

I floss nightly.

I never butt floss. I don't mind if my woman does though. In fact I encourage it. You don't want plaque building up there.

I still don't understand all the fuss about flossing teeth every night.

I'll tell you guys what - I don't floss my teeth. At all. If I have celery stuck in my teeth, I'll use a toothpick - or anything with a pointed edge that's at hand (safety pins, pens, etc) :lmao: Very un-ladylike, eh.

I've never had any problems with my teeth, thankfully. No tooth-whitening needed, no cavities, no other bad-dental-hygeine problems. Touch wood.

Brushing twice a day does the trick.

Some people just have too much time on their hands.

I've never flossed and never had any problems. I brush my teeth once per day in the morning for around 3-4 minutes. And thats it. I try to get to the dentist for a cleaning at least once per year.

Google periodontal disease

You will see why you must floss everyday.

I floss daily by the way.. more at night but in the mornings I just do a light flossing..

Every single person has and gets some form of periodontal disease thruout their life.. the older they get the more hold it gets on the gums..

The gums start to pull away from the teeth and the bacteria causes bone loss.. it is not reversible..

Seriously google it.. if you don't floss daily you will have severe bone loss in your older/elder years and loose all your teeth..

The cost of implants and dentures is high..

Why do you think old people loose their teeth ?

No floss here, but I tend to scrub my teeth till my gums bleed a little....I have a HARD bristle brush that I figure will "POKE" between the teeth...Kinda like flossing....same difference really and actually.

I only brush at night BTW....once a day is good for me....I drink alot of scope though....just so I know I have not got ass breath.

Ooooo, you scared me so, A_C.

I can't wait to lose all my teeth. Then I'll watch them grow back all over again.

But thanks for reminding me of the periodontal disease risk. :D I will keep that in mind.

A dentist and a periodontist are not the same.. A dentist doesn't normally know how to diagnose periodontal disease.

Bone loss shows up on xrays only.. the pockets that are formed on the gums can be tested with special tools..

I take it you didn't google periodontal disease Alpha

Here is a quote from a webpage that showed up in google

Who gets periodontal disease?

People usually don't show signs of gum disease until they are in their 30s or 40s. Men are more likely to have periodontal disease than women. Although teenagers rarely develop periodontitis, they can develop gingivitis, the milder form of gum disease. Most commonly, gum disease develops when plaque is allowed to build up along and under the gum line.

What can I do to prevent gum disease?

Here are some things you can do to prevent periodontal diseases:

Brush your teeth twice a day (with a fluoride toothpaste)

Floss every day

Visit the dentist routinely for a check-up and professional cleaning

Eat a well balanced diet

Don't use tobacco products

It also can just show up in a short period...

I wasn't trying to scare you.. by the way.. teeth don't grow back..

I was trying to point out a fact about oral hygiene that most people don't take seriously till they loose their teeth..by then it is too late..

I think thats baloney...that like saying an orthopaedic surgeon couldn't recognize a broken leg.

I have my regular x-rays taken yearly and then the panoramic 180 degree xray taken every 2 years.

Well, A_C, I didn't google the information either..

But from what you quoted, it says that you should floss to "prevent periodontal disease". It doesn't say that if you do not floss, you'll develop periodontal disease.

Some people are predisposed to developing the disease because of a number of individual factors. Some people may not develop it at all.

While bone degeneration is a given as a person ages, it depends on a lot of other factors whether or not it will affect the person's oral health.

I'm just sayin' :) Of course, it's good to floss in moderation, etc.

Actually no.. Hard brushing creates gum loss that gives room for the bacteria

The best form of brushing is up and down or a circular motion..

Talk to your dentist about it.. they will tell you that brushing your teeth till you bleed is very unhealthy for your teeth/gums

Bleeding gums is also a sign of bacteria infected in the gums..

I know, I know. ;)

By the way, I've heard of random old men from China growing their teeth back just because they've lived long enough to see "a second childhood", as they say.
