RealityCheck
We don't know everything.... we probably never will. If everyone just accepted everything, our development as people and a species would stop! Personally, I am happy with the level of knowledge I do have regarding these issues, I don't feel I need to know any more at the moment. My life is rich, fulfilled and full of happiness. I am happy to just be for now. Amen to this sister!
bones
This debate fascinates me because I've always been on the fence about afterlife, clairvoyance, etc. I have suffered from depression and a lot of emotional abuse. Because of that, I've done a lot of reading and studying about the brain and its functions. I have a very good understanding of the brain chemistry discussed. I also attend church (on and off) and find it an uplifting experience, yet question the existence of a higher being. At the same time, I am one of those individuals that clearly has a sixth sense. My mother who is a skeptic about everything has (after 43 years) come to recognize I have an oddly sharp intuition. There have been times I've just "known things" without explanation. An example: A woman I had just met and worked with for two days was on the telephone. I could tell from her conversation she had a married son with a wife that was expecting. When she got off the phone, she told me about becoming a grandmother. I must have given her a strange blank stare, because I was overwhelmed with my own thought -- "No you are not, because she's going to lose the baby." Naturally I didn't share this out loud. The next day I reported for work and the woman told me her daughter-in-law lost her baby. I felt sick. I had no history with this woman, yet had a 100% certainty of what was going to happen. There have been other odd things like this over the past two decades. Not a lot of them, but enough that causes me to be on the fence about the topic. I have difficulty reconciling my understanding of the concrete scientific world with my sixth sense.
riobikini
re: Bones: " This debate fascinates me because I've always been on the fence about afterlife.." Bones -after reading your post, it sounds as if you may not really be as much "on the fence" about an afterlife as you think. Maybe -instead- you are more skeptical about conventional religious concepts, than anything. Perhaps, they don't describe well enough your experiences with your sensory ability. Conventional religions often don't accept it -and those who even recognize such "sixth sense" ability tend to frown on it, or determine it "satanic", or as "proof" of rejection of a Divine Benevolent God. It simply doesn't fit into their precisely-hewn, square box of God-stuff. Science only goes one step farther -or better- (depending on how you're looking at it) in, at least, researching the phenomenon -but in the end -usually winds up rejecting the idea, wrapping it up in their own kind of box and concluding -finally- that neurons and hormones are merely playing tricks on the mind -or left lose-ended and that there is much to be learned that exhausted attempts up to present are just unable to figure out. And perhaps that is the best answer we have and where it lies today; we simply do not have enough information to say "nay, the phenomenon is poppycock", or "yep- it's bonafide and it works just this way" and proceed to tell us. (Smile) A few hundred posts ago (as well as one recently), I denied ever having such a sixth sense or any experiences in which I encountered similar phenomenon. Not wanting others to think I was some kind of nutcase -thinking it would somehow, damage my accountability and integrity in this site- I decided not to write about those experiences that have often defied the usual accounts of "coincidence", or per ratio odds in happening -or pre-cognitive knowing about. The thing about having phenomenal, or unexplainable occurrences -and telling about them- is that it often lands you in a "nowhere" zone with others who have not experienced them -and you suddenly wind up with a label you can never quite be free of. For myself -I chose to keep silent about it for that exact reason. I am impressed with your willingness to readily admit your ability -as well as your strength in doing so. Keep listening to your sixth sense -it may confuse you at times- but from my own personal experiences I can vouch for the accuracy of it, when others not having it are lost for answers or direction, and you know which direction they should head -and for yourself , as well. There is purpose in having this ability. Use it. -Rio
