Prozac- upping the dose -BY alot lol

I really want to upp the dose of my prozac.

I can find some relief from taking it, but if I want ALOT of relief I know I will benefit better from upping the dose.

But...I can't get a hold of my doctor, I already saw her last week and feel stupid going in again after setteling with 40 mg of prozac.

My own thought was to ( since I have 3 refills remaining) take two 40 mg of prozac. To be safe, maybe one in the morning and one at night.....if even doubling by that much is safe...lol

Which is my question, is that safe ? Sorry I'm very impatient and almost desperate to find a better solution

I know some will say I should speak with my doctor at first. But has anyone done this themselves and didn't get sick?

Please don't take matters into your own hands...Talk to your Dr because if you double up the dosage, you could have a reaction to it in a not so good way and end up in the hospital!

In the meantime, do some yoga, relaxation breathing and try to keep your mind focussed on other things.

Don't feel stupid, if you need go again - GO! This is your health at risk here and it should be number ONE, even if you are embarressed to talk to your Dr again.

Thanks whichwayisup, I appreciate your advice..

althought it came to late. But.......Instead of taking two of the 40 mg, I took one 40 mg and cut the other in half( dumped out some of the powder) and took that half, so I guess I upped the dose by 20...and I'm sure Ill be fine with sticking with that for a week.

Hey It's smarter than doing what I orginally planned. Although not as smart as it would have been by going to the doctor...opps:sick:

I know this is replying to you a little too late but.....wow.....what in the world are you thinking? Dumping out some of the powder??? They put them in capsules for a reason. Sometimes capsules are time-released which means they let out a little of the drug at a time into your system. And then there are some drugs that can tear holes in your throat if you take them out of the coated capsule.

And 60 mg. is the max for that drug.

Also if you just started taking 40 mg. last week (from when the post was written) then you're not going to notice a difference yet and shouldnt increase it yet.

Hello,

I'm a bit late. But, what I'm aware of, experienced etc:

1. It is safe enough to take more, but not advised, and probably won't help as it takes some time to filter through.

2. You should at least telephone your doctor to talk about it if you intend on changing doses.

3. Prozac is not a panacea; it will not cure you. While it affects everyone else different, my own experience was using it as a base that stopped me getting intense low feelings, but did not make me happier etc. Upping the dose might not make it better or another anti-depressant may in fact be the answer. Just make sure you don't place your getting better or being ok in the pill, you need to do other things, it just helps when you are bolloxed and couldn't do the other things.

4. Communicate everything about its effect and how you feel with the Doctor so they can ascertain if changing the dose, or another anti-depressant would be better etc. The doctor will not judge you, he may in fact have or have had similar problems.

5. Try and get some sort of therapy or counselling. From my experience it's far better to have someone to talk too, help make realistic sense of things and be practical about things (maybe this is just Cognitive Behaviour Therapy - this is the one I get, and it's super, I really recommend it, if you can get it). A good friend or family member may be just a good.

6. Things will get better, but it takes time. Take your time, try not to do to much, and try and do things you enjoy again or find new things. Try and get out and about with friends, family etc. You have ups and downs. It's hard work, and you won't suddenly get better. Don't feel sorry for whatever has happened or how you feel/think now, try and deal with it and realise that you can and will get better.

7. When you are feeling desperate, talk to someone. This is imperative.

Solidarity, brother.
