False complaint made about me from coworker me to manager Need

Recommended Posts

I have been at my current position for a few months with no complaints. I was blind sided when my manager told me a coworker made a complaint about me not only to him but to my other boss. I am the secretary to my manager who spoke to me, as well as on a as needed basis for this other coworker. Now he has been with the company for a very long time and is quite friendly with people..for me from the minute I met him there was something I didn't like. He's one of those pretentious, I'm so much smarter then you types..so of course me and him don]t talk except for for hi and byes. Well he's buddy buddy with the other kiss hiney secretary and I noticed that she would always be doing work for him. So bascially all I do is answer his phones and the one assignment he's given me and other odds and ends that I guess the other one didn't feel like doing I did and never refused to not do work for him...he just chooses to give me none. Well the complaint was that I am not providing him with enough support especially the phone..meanwhile I explained to my boss he gives me no assignment and goes to his friend..which my manager agreed about. My manager said that he feels I am doing a good job assiting him and others and he will be giving me a good review. He also stated that this coworker made the comment that I am hard to read..oh is that short for I dont kiss his behind like his friend does. Me, being that I come in and do my job not discussing my personal life or spending 90% of my day shooting the breeeze I guess offends this guy in some way. My boss also said that he doesn't know why my coworker never once confronted me which I agree..I mean if I wasn't supporting him enough why didn't he ever say anything to me. So I can take this complaint is a personal bascially...hey I don't necessarily like him and he prob don't like me. My manager said straight out that this is all office politics. So bascially this guy is trying to stir waves by reporting me to 2 bosses with no documentation of what I did wrong. My boss said he told him that he could make the other secretary his instead of me and my manager would be fine with me only working for him and the others. So how do I go about this? My boss told me to wait a while and talk tomy coworker about it but my friend advised me to only speak to this guy in front of my manager? Or do I let it go completely. Maybe this guys ego is brusied bc when he used to leer at me nonstop he might have gotten a dirty look from me once or 2x lol. I may add that this coworker has been with the company for a very long time and is a high up though but my manager and his are way above him. What do u guys think?

First I'd suggest you put your secretarial skills to work in your reply and please put in some paragraphs. That was difficult to read.

I would also suggest you put some time into building relationships with those chatty pretentious co-workers. A boss wants a smooth running office and that means you need to get along.

There is nothing wrong with asking your manager/boss to present specific occurrences when it comes time that he chooses to discipline you. I think, however, it may be better to avoid that situation and see what you can do to get along with the man who has been with the company so much longer than you.

Sorry, it's not fair and it isn't pleasant. That's the way it is in offices.

Build trust at all levels (coworkers through management) and build your reputation as dependable, thorough, and pleasant. Eventually you will become more untouchable and subject to lies or misconceptions.

I never said we don't get along. We have never had altercation. I am pleasant and my manager advised me the next day to not say anything to him and that this will blow over in time. I am going to take his adivce and not say anything. From me saying hi and bye to him that is not being pleasant? And I get along with everyone. I am not going to say I am buddy buddy with anyone because I am not but my work gets done on time and properly. I just think it is unfair when a false complaint is made when it comes down to the fact that this guy just wants someone else to assist him or maybe some other underlying reason. That is fine. All they would have had to do is just have told me or made up is "hey we think you have enough work as it is and you no longer need to assist him" that's it. I would bet my life on it that he's told other coworkers about the complaint he's made. So what do I do now...I'm guessing just walk around and continue to get no work assigned to me and pretend like nothing happened:o.
