Question about TSH testing

Recommended Posts

I have hypothyroidism and take Cytomel for it. My doctor recently told me that my levels were off and increased my dosage and told me to have it re-tested in a month. My question is: when I go to have my blood drawn should I take my Cytomel that morning or not?

Thanks,

Cindy

THIS IS NOT A QUESTION YOU SHOULD BE ASKING HERE!!! CALL YOUR DOCTOR FOR THE ANSWER.

There is nobody on this forum, to the best of my knowledge, who carries malpractice insurance or who is licensed to practice medicine. You would be an absolute fool to get an answer to a question like that from an anonymous poster on an Internet forum.

I can tell you, if you are too timid to call your doctor take your meds that morning and let the testing laboratory know you did so. If there's a problem, they will have you back to be tested another day.

Jeeez, Tony - excuse me for being such a fool! I just thought there might be others here with the same condition who get tested often and would know the answer to the question. I certainly didn't mean to upset you so. I'll go away now.

the reason tony always screams when people ask medical qns on the board is that some members WILL give advice, even though they're not even remotely qualified to do so.

good luck,

I hope you will consider throughout your life: Do not get medical information from another person who is going through or has gone through something similar to yourself. Without significant knowledge of a person's specific medical history, there is simply no way your condition or situation can be accurately compared to that of others.

Get all medical information from a licensed medical doctor or other qualified medical professional. It's your life. I wasn't screaming at you. I just wanted to make real sure you understood that this information needs to come from your doctor.

Trusting somebody you don't know on the Internet with serious matters of your health is just not something you want to do. Don't take my word for this...ask around!!!

I shiver to think that many people do this.....it gives me the willies!!!!

I'm sorry Tony, but I find you to be a very condescending and pompous person.

And for the record, I was not asking for "medical advice" on my condition or to compare my hypothyroidism with anyone else's. I was merely asking for the answer to a factual question. But don't worry, I will definitely call my doctor's office Monday morning and ask them before going to have my blood drawn. Thanks for your concern. :)

Yep, you should definitely take it "as usual" that morning......that's the only way to get a truly accurate picture of your TSH level. Ya know? I have hypo myself (hashimoto's thyroiditis, actually)...I take Synthroid daily, seems to help a fair bit. Have done some reading on T3 (Cytomel, etc)....but for now, just taking Selenium daily (that's supposed to help convert T4 to T3).

Have you ever heard of the Thyroid Forums at About.com? They are fantastic. Hundreds and hundreds of gals there, who have thyroid disease (hypo, hyper, hashi's, etc)......great place to ask questions and seek input. In my experience, most there know more than most endocrinologists, and I say this as an RN (based on my experience).

Let me know if you need the address for this awesome site.

Here's the site I was referring to:

Thyroid Website/Forums/Info

On this page, you'll see a row of GREY links (home, forums, etc)...click on FORUMS and that's how you get to the forums. You'll have to sign up first to read/post, but it doesn't take long. It's definitely a great resource, and the best I've found to date. Hope this helps. PM me if you have any problems getting in there.

YOU WRITE: "And for the record, I was not asking for "medical advice" on my condition or to compare my hypothyroidism with anyone else's. I was merely asking for the answer to a factual question."

That's exactly what I am trying to communicate to you. You are living extremely dangerously if you trust and depend on answers to questions like this given by anonymous people on a love form.

Hey, I'm on your side. I want you to get the best results possible on your test. While some people here may absolutely know the correct answer to your question, you cannot know it's correct until you talk to your doctor.

YOU WRITE: "I find you to be a very condescending and pompous person."

That's OK. I can handle that.

We do not have to make a meal out of this issue. My participation over.

Tony, while I can understand the basis of your point....that yes, people should be discouraged from seeking medical advice off the internet......and should be turning to the correct medical professional, I have to ask you this..and I'm not trying to start anything.

Many, MANY times in the past, I've seen you dole out very strong advice to one particular poster here (who suffered from many problems: social phobia, panic disorder, anxiety problems, bla bla), on what type of specific medication she should be asking for from her doctor. Klonopin, I believe. You've gone into meticulous detail all about this medication, how it works, why it would be good for HER...and later on, when she came back seeking more of the same advice, you firmly chastised her for failing to ask her doc about trying it. Seeing how you're not a medical doctor, or psychiatrist, how is strongly recommending specific medications to a clearly distraught and unbalanced individual any different than Cindy's post seeking info?

If we're going to discourage people from seeking medical advice here, and are going to redirect them to seek advice from trained professionals (their doctor, etc), shouldn't that extend to ALL areas of medical/medication-related advice? Just curious.

I don't chastise people for not asking their doctor for anything. It's their life, not mine. I do recommend people ask their doctors about medications...just like the many commercials on TV. I ALWAYS tell them to ask a medical doctor about it. Suggesting a person ask their doctor about a medication is not the same as telling a person specifically if they should take their medication the day of a medical test. Not even in the same ballpark.

I just don't see how you can compare that to the issue here. This lady is asking a question that she should clearly ask a medical doctor. I could suggest what she do but I still don't think anyone with an ounce of brains should take information posted by anonymous people on a love forum regarding a medical issue as truth as a substitute for consulting a physician. I also don't think it's cool for anybody to get in the middle of a doctor's treatment of his or her patient. But I'm not going to get into it with you because it's not worth my time.

I appreciate you pointing this out to me.
