How to make friends with workmates?

Okay I'm a contractor and work with new people every month or two, I'm extremely shy but the crazy thing is that I can make reasonable conversation with people in the team. And if I'm working directly with someone, I can make even better conversation. In fact the other week I chatted with this girl I was working with, and we ended up catching the bus home for about an hour.

I'm definitely improving my conversation skills, but when it comes to things like suggesting lunch or hanging out/being friends, I get a panic attack and it can sometimes take me half an hour to actually ask the question (and no doubt my body language is erratic and obvious that I'm nervous).

What would you recommend? I find that even people I get along with really well, don't want to hang out. There's a girl I've been working with and I will only be working with her for a few more days. Yet I put off the question each day.

I was thinking of suggesting that we stay in touch? Or wait until I've left and then email her and suggest through email. I've also been in the situation where the person has agreed, but only because they felt put on the spot. Would it be seen as weak or stupid to wait and then email?

Thanks

I say go for it. You've got nothing to lose if you suggest keeping in touch by email...and if nothing comes out of it, at least you know you wont being seeing/working with her anymore. I think you should do it on the last day, but keep it casual and professional.

But remember, not all co-workers want to be friends and friends dont always want to hang out.
