i am a muslim and this month for us is the month of ramadan where we have to fast from sunrise til sunset..the problem is that i used to be very very fat and it took me 6 months to get skinny and another 6 months to burn the flubbber off..

now i have to fast for a month and so i need options for workout which would burn the fat and at the same time help me keep the muscle i have gained..i tried to ask people and they weren't very helpful with there replies..the most common one of them was tat i have to decide which is more important to me religion or gym(my body) this didn't hellp at all because religion is important but only i know wat i went through to get to where i am today..

plz guys give me some good advice with it..i would really appreciate it..thanks

I don't know how your schedule is but given the circumstance, to keep as much muscle on as possible, you're going to want to consume some slow burning proteins early in the morning (before sunrise). Eggs are great for this. Load up on them in the morning. That's gonna be your best bet to get through the day until night time. That and a multivitamin, even just for health reasons, let alone to keep muscle on.

Any work out schedule should have rest periods. If you have been going for a year your body can use the extended rest. For next year schedule yourself so a rest period falls during ramadan. The ony other alternative is to workout after sundown.

Work out in the morning. Set you're alarm and be sure to eat through out the night during this period. Load up on proteins at night and carbs before sunrise. Try and get your work-out in as soon after you eat as possible. At night, you need the proteins to help your muscle fibers heal.

Eating through out the night is very important. Long periods without food (8+ hours), causes a type of shock (catabolic sounds almost right to me) and puts your body into a type of starvation mode. During this time your body will start to cannibalize muscle. Not normally a big deal, except that you're going to put yourself through this shock twice each day which can be bad for maintaining muscle.

Be sure to take vitamins, unless your diet meets those needs... it's especially important during fasting IMHO.

If you want to keep muscle, then fasting will do you no good..I know you have to for Ramadan though.

So after sundown when you CAN eat...better load up on meats and protein. If you don't want all the fat in some meats, then eat skinless chicken breasts or at least buy some whey protein powder to make up for the protein you aren't getting. Because you aren't going to build or keep muscle if you don't get protein.

I do not encourage fasting at all. You WILL lost muscle mass and it is simply not healthy.

At an early job of mine, a few co-workers would be in body-building competitions and they would starve themselves a week before the event so they looked 'ripped' and everything stood out.

These guys were always sick during and afterward.

But if you insist on fasting, eat much protein, eat much fat, and make sure you keep the water flowing. Water is most important.

Its a religious fast and only occurs during daytime hours. The fast for religious Muslims includes water. When NBA hall of famer Akeem Olajuwan played for the Rockets it was always a concern. Being an elite team they often had the weekend afternoon games and he played through his yearly fast.
