I've gained weight and I'm MAD!

Recommended Posts

I'm so pissed off.

After my breakup I lost like 15lbs. Felt great about that, if nothing else. Now I've gaing back all of that +5lbs, maybe a bit more!

I expected to gain a little back, but even over a year later, I was still down. Now suddenly, in the past 6-8 months, I've packed on all this weight! and w/o any significant change in diet or exercise. And it's not seeming to stop!

The only thing I can think of is my anti-ds. Switched to Effexor about 7 months ago.

I'm so frustrated- I was feeling really good about my body and now I just feel like a cow! :( :( :(

KM -

I would never say never about Effexor possibly causing weight gain, but it would be more likely to cause weight loss.

I'd say talk to your doc about what's going on with you. Might consider having your thyroid checked...amongst other things.

That said, do you tend to have seasonal weight fluctuations? I personally tend to pack on an extra 5 pounds every winter, that goes away when summer returns. Don't know why, but I've been that way since college.

YMMV.

I'm finding a lot of people saying they gained weight on Effexor online. Some that have lost too. But I can't figure any other reason. My weight has never changed this drastically in this period of time ever before, except for the anxiety related loss I experienced post-breakup. In fact, it stayed almost bizarrely steady up until that point.

I'm calling my doctor and getting off this crap. It's not any better than the celexa- I'll switch back if I have to.

DID IT. Called my doctor.

This stuff ain't working much anymore anyways.

I'm really beginning to believe my depression isn't about serotonin, but rather, a hormonal thing. Or maybe something that just can't be fixed. :(

Good for you.

If a med isn't working for you, it's really important to let the doc know so they can make adjustments. Hope you get some better results soon (but if not, don't forget about looking into the thyroid...just something to think about.)

You need to get off the a-ds NOW. I think people who go on those are kinda wimpy. I went through the highest stress situation, really WAS depressed (as in would sit around in my pj's for days on end without leaving the house and sleeping for 13 hours plus a day). I went to a therapist and said 'I need anti-depressants' and he would have none of that. I started getting out of the house more, and eventually exercising and eating right. EXERCISING AND EATING RIGHT ARE THE ANSWER. NOT ONLY WILL YOUR DEPRESSION BE CURED, THE POUNDS WILL DROP OFF. I STARTED DOING GILAD FROM FIT TV LAST WEEK AND EATING CLEANLY JUST 7 DAYS AGO, 7 DAYS LATER....I AM FITTING INTO MY SIZE 6 JEANS AGAIN AND LOOKING HOT. I LOST 7 POUNDS IN ONE WEEK. FORGET THE ANTIDEPRESSANT NONSENSE, YOU DON'T NEED THEM. I WANT TO THANK MY THERAPIST FOR BEING REAL AND NOT PROMOTING ANTIDEPRESSANTS AS THE ANSWER.

No, good advice. I got it checked prior to starting the anti-ds because I really didn't want to be taking them.

Normal levels. Wish it had been that easy. :(

It's just so frustrating to be going to bed hungry but gaining weight anyways. :(

Off your soapbox now?

I said the same sort of things. Ignored what has been plaguing me since I was a kid. It was manageable most of the time, until my break-up. I was having panic attacks, dizziness, and was so anxious I could barely eat, and what I did eat came out of one way or another too quickly because my system was so stressed out.

It's been the same whether through periods of healthy eating and exercise, or lounging and pigging out.

Gotta go with what works.

Kitten, Effexor CAN cause weight gain. It's pretty rare... it's unknown as to why this happens to some people. Most lose weight. I think its caused by increased levels of norepiniphrine!

Google it- doesn't seem rare at all.

It's just frustrating to be taking medications that are completely random in their side effects. Might gaining weight, might lose it, might get nausea, might get increased hunger, might get diarrhea, might get constipation..... ie NO FRIGGIN CLUE WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN!

I thought I was ok since I didn't gain on celexa- guess notl

I work in the medical field and I've done research on some of these drugs!

One, they have no idea how most of these pills work! Dont be fooled into thinking that they do. Viagra was not originally an impotence drug ... it just had an interesting side effect.

Besides everyone's body is slightly different! So these pills dont work the same on different poeple!

So I'm realizing. And now I gotta go through withdrawing from this med.... it has lousy side effects when you do... ugh.

I think I'm going to ask to go back to a low-dose of celexa. Neither drug seems to do much for the mild repetitive depression, by they've worked well on my anxiety.
