Should I return engagement ring?

:confused:My fiance broke up with me...He says he's decided he doesn't want to get married afterall. We dated for 8 years and have been engaged for the last two...We've been broken up for five months--he never asked for the ring back before until he found out I'm engaged to somebody else. Are you supposed to give the ring back?

This is my feeling on it.

If YOU broke the engagement, you return the ring. If HE broke the engagement, you get to keep the ring.

5 months is pretty quick, though. You certainly didn't ask for advice on that, but I hope you've healed from, grieved and learned from your previous relationship. Most people wouldn't be able to in such a short amount of time, but obviously it's your life and your decision.

Good luck! :)

Why would you want to keep a ring that would only be a memory of something that is better forgotten, particularly since you are engaged to somebody else? The fact that you have found somebody you really love tells me he did you a favor.

Give it back and move on!

In most states you keep the ring if he broke the engagement. If it was given on a holiday, Christmas, Valentines Day, your birthday, your case is stronger.

That said, when he broke the engagement I would have returned the ring, but I am full of pride (one of the seven deadly sins.)

Ann Landers and Miss Manners both say:

If he broke it, you can keep it.

If you broke it, return it.

I would return it anyway. Its only a material thing

Are ya'll freaking females freaking stupid by laws under many states the conditions of engagement rings are in marriage. They are contingent upon getting marriage if you do not get married, you either have to return the rings or give back the entire value for them!!!

If you do not he could take you to court for them!

What would you prefer, to give them back or go to court and be embarrased?

Just give them back!!!

Your not getting married!!! To him!!!!

I totally agree. As a female I have no idea why women want to keep engagement rings from past relationships. Just give it back so you'll be stress free with no bad memories. :)

You waited 6 long years for that ring and he broke it off so by the rules you get to keep it and in my opinion SELL IT and move on. You definately put it you time!

Wait, you've been broken up for 5 months and are engaged to someone else already? Is that why he left you cuz you were seeing someone else? You so incredibly obviously have no emotion tied to the relationship with the ex, so your want to keep it could only be out of greed. Give it back. He bought it, let him have it. You have another man that can give you a big shiny ring.

And actually all, in many states, the law is that the ring is a gift contingent upon the act of marriage. No marriage, no gift, and he gets it back. Trust me, I went through this very recently.

There are states where you must return the ring, regardless of who broke the engagement. There are also states where if the prospective groom breaks the engagement, the jilted bride keeps the ring. There are also states where no matter what, it's viewed as a gift, therefore the woman gets to keep the ring.

With these three differences, it's worthwhile to do the legal research to find out what the rulings have been, within the state you reside in.

It's kind of messed up that you're engaged again after being engaged to someone else just five months ago. If you had so little emotional investment in the previous relationship, you shouldn't have accepted the ring in the first place.

She's engaged to someone else??? and still wont give the ring back?!?

There's a story of a man , broker who brought his woman a $38,000 engagment ring. Now They broke up and she still hasnt retured the ring. Under new york state law, he's gonna win that case.

Either she pays back the money for the ring's worth or give back the ring entirely!!!

What would you choose to give the money or the ring, cause under the law you dont have any damn choice!

I prefer the advice of the infamous Zsa Zsa Gabor....

"Dahling, if you break up with your fiancé, always send back the ring . . . but keep the stone."
