marlena
Anybody know anything about them? I have one and a new doctor I am seeing thinks I should have it out. She even mentioned a hysterectomy. I am getting a second opinion. I am scared? Are they often cancerous?
Lyssa
An ovarian cyst can be as small as a pea, or as large as a grapefruit. Most ovarian cysts are functional in nature, and harmless. I got this from Wikipedia. You might wanna check it out. I'm sorry to hear about this. Please get a second opinion!
Author marlena
Thanks Lyssa! I have been doing a lot of reading up on the Net but it's stressing me out even more! I keep thinking the worst. I am having some tests done. Tomorrow I will be making an appointment with one of the best gyns in my city. I am scared but hey, what can I do? I think I'll know more in a couple of weeks. When it rains, it really does pour, doesn't it? thanks for your kinds words.
Kasan
I had ovarian cysts--they were diagnosed by a vaginal ultra-sound. My daughter has them too. I was put on the pill and it straightened them out. They can burst and cause terrible bleeds, that is why they are removed surgically, although they can come back. If you experience extreme pain--get yourself to the hospital pronto. My daughter had emergency surgery for them a couple of years ago and hasn't had a problem since. I don't know what they do if you have gone through menopause--and I am not sure if that applies to you. Feel free to pm me.
Author marlena
Kasan, So sorry about your daughter but so glad things worked out so well for the both of you. You must have a had quite a scare there! I feel no pain whatsover just a sense of heaviness in my abdomen and some bleeding. I made the mistake of changing doctors and not sticking with regular check ups with my first doctor. It's a holiday weekend here so I can't get him in his office but come Monday I will definitely arrange an appointment. Of course he will rightly reproach for me. I don't know if it's grown or not but my doctor (the first one) will definitely have it on record. I don't trust this new doctor. She insists on surgery but no, I am going to get my real doctor's opinion. I've read up on the NET but that only makes me feel worse as I take the worst possible scenario. Stupid I know! They say that most of these cysts are benign so I'm sure it'll be OK! I just hope I won't have to have surgery as I am scared to death of operations and such. I 'll know more next week, I hope. Thanks, Kasan! It's nice of you to take an interest.

Well, one thing that came out of this is that now I know what 'ovarian cyst' is! Glad to know that you're seeing one of the best gyns! I would be scared too, Marlena!!! Just reading about it scares me! I really hope everything goes well and I'll keep you in my prayer! Hang in there!
DazedandConfused66
My wife has PCOS but was put on the pill at an early age...this seems to keep them in check. She's never required surgery for any of them. However my 14 year old daughter, at age 12, developed a cyst on her ovary that quickly grew to the size of a golf ball. We had to have hers surgically removed and she was placed on the pill shortly thereafter to try and deal with this. As mentioned, seek medical help immediately if you experience pain in that region. That's the only way we knew my daughter had an issue. She just almost overnight developed extreme pain and within 24 hours was in surgery. Other than the pain issue, they don't typically cause any other issues. A hysterectomy shouldn't be considered as a "first line of defense" unless it's causing you issues. Author marlena
Thanks Dazed, I'm so surprised that girls so young can get ovarian cysts. I'm so glad your daughter was taken to hospital in time for I've read that they can burst. Something like our appendix. Yes, I didn't like this new doctor rushing to recommend a hysterectomy. To complicate issues, though my pap test was clear, there were some findings regarding the tissue that necessitate a blood test for traces of cancer. Plus she said I might have to have a cuttelage. Is that what it's called? This is all distressing but I am trying to remain calm and positive ('til its really time to panic). I don't like this new doctor, probably because I don't like what I am hearing or her suggestions) so like I've already said I am going to schedule a new appointment with my old doctor who has a very good reputation and who I trust more. I only changed because his office was a bit far from where I live. My cyst is 4.38 centimetres. Is that considered to be big? I have absolutely no pain as of yet. I'll know more next week hopefully. Dazed, I have read your posts to LB. Your story about your wife's cancer moved me greatly. I didn't know there were people like you left on this planet. Thanks so much for responding. It meant a lot to me.
Trialbyfire
A second opinion is a good idea. A friend of mine had and still has cysts. Years ago, she was told by her doctor that there was a strong chance she couldn't ever have children, unless she had them removed. She's had two children in the interim... whichwayisup
http://www.loveshack.org/forums/t58485/ http://www.loveshack.org/forums/t75431/ These are my two threads about ovarian cysts...Hope that helps. Sorry to hear that you have 'em! Painful little suckers, huh? Mine always burst on their own, I had ultrasounds that showed they were't big enough to take out, but if they got to a certain size, then we'd talk about getting rid of them. Try not to panic, and definately get that second opinion.
Author marlena
That's just it TBF!! It's hard to find a doctor you can trust..almost like trying to find an honest lawyer! Yes, I"m definitey seeking out that second opinion. Maybe third? WWIU, Thanks so much. I am going to those links right now! I am trying not to panic til I get that second opinion. THEN I'll panic. Thanks so much.
DazedandConfused66
Dazed, I have read your posts to LB. Your story about your wife's cancer moved me greatly. I didn't know there were people like you left on this planet. Thanks so much for responding. It meant a lot to me. You are welcome for the comment, and thanks for the positive feedback. However, I'm not that special. I have met literally dozens and dozens of men in my own hometown that, at least from my perspective, are inspirations to ME, be it as role-models for support of my wife as she battles cancer, or just as role models of how to be a better husband. I really do believe the world is filled with more decent, caring and loving people than evil, selfish and hateful ones. Unfortunately, like most things in life, we tend to only see the bad...seldom the good. Good luck with your cysts...make sure they check you for PCOS as well as just checking on your cysts. While presence of cysts doesn't automatically diagnose you with PCOS, the two are related. PCOS has other treatment options and hysterectomies are the LAST resort typically, unless your child-bearing years are behind you already. Cysts and PCOS can sometimes also be related to other endocrine-related issues, such as Graves or thyroid conditions. It's highly treatable....as of now, even after breast cancer diagnosis, my wife has not had a hysterectomy. Docs make it sound like that's a "no biggie" procedure, but current studies are showing it's far too often done unnecessarily, when newer procedures like a myomectomy are available. In addition, hysterectomies often leave a woman with orgasm issues, particularly if she used to be able to enjoy uterine orgasms...she seldom can do this after a hysterectomy (although clitoral orgasms are still possible). I've been a bit of a "patients advocate" when it comes to my wife's health. If the cure seems worse than the disease, we have sought alternatives.
whichwayisup
It is normal for women to have these cysts in their mid 30's. I am 36 now and hopefully (knock on wood) I won't have anymore cysts.. There are different kinds of cysts, but it does sound like the one you have is like the one I had. painful but not dangerous. Do some deep breathing exercises, some yoga and just know that things will be okay. That will keep you calmer Yup, read the threads and feel free to ask me any questions. Author marlena
Thanks WWI, Just read the links. Scary stuff! Esp. that Dp shot thing or whatever it is called! WOW! Nobody is doing that to me! So glad yours went away naturally. One poster said they don't operate if it's under 10cm. Mine, 4. 38. So why did she right away say surgery? Is she out to make a fast buck? Sheesh, I'm getting paranoid! Like you said, it is tough being a woman!!! Can't wait to see what the other doctor says. Another stressful weekend in the making! Author marlena
Thanks guys, You are all such good friends. Yes, Dazed, there are lots of nice people out there. LS is testament to that. Just look at all these amazing responses. No, alas, I am not in my reproductive years. I wish I were. I would have had a dozen more kids. I loved being a mother to my daughter. Hope your wife is feeling better. I did Yoga for teo years and I will definitely be doing my prana yama exercises WWWI! These breathing exercises help me when I am in extreme stress - like when I fly. Yup.. i have that phobia too! Thanks, guys, for coming through for me once again!
whichwayisup
Also, try not to google and get info on this too much...Sometimes it's good, but it also can scare the crap outta ya...I know as recently I did some serious googling when I had the migraine last week and had the flashes of light in my right eye...All symptoms showed detached retina - I know it's not that, it's all migraine induced, but still is freaky to read all the bad stuff online...I stopped doing that. Let me know how your Dr appt goes!
Author marlena
WWIU, Absolutely!!! Too much googling is harmful to your health. Let's both stay off googling for a while. Better yoga!!!
