My Sleep Cycle is So Messed Up

Recommended Posts

During the week I try to go to bed early, but I don't always make it. Regardless, I end up waking up feeling tired. I generally don't make it into the office before 8:30 (usually around 9), because I'm trying to squeeze every wink in before I jump up and rush to work.

Every night, I wake up at least a couple of times, usually between 1 and 2 and maybe again around 5. Then my alarm goes off, which I quickly kill. And then I sleep for another hour. So the longest stretch of decent sleep I've gotten is around 3 hours.

I have these damn bags under my eyes all the time, and I hate them.

On the weekends I've been sleeping a lot. Yesterday and today I was in bed until 11. Then I got up and went for a really hard, exhausting run in the foothills, then I came home and fell asleep again for at least an hour. Now I feel tired again. But I know tonight I'll go to bed, drop off to sleep in a matter of minutes, only to wake up in a few hours for no reason.

Maybe your lack of caffeine is causing a withdrawal?

Well, there are many things that could point to restless sleep. Bad bed, imbalanced melatonin levels in the brain...

I would go see a doctor. No reason not to have it checked out. That or buy some Melatonin and take that before you head to bead. It should knock you out for the night.

I'll go to a doctor if everything else fails. That's typical for me.

It sucks doesn't it, STAR GAZER? Maybe tonight we'll both sleep great.

Usually I have this problem in the summer when it's ridiculously hot...so to have this problem now, as it's cooling off and very pleasant is just.....irksome.

It's the time of the year, depending on where you live...SAD.

Definately see your doctor, maybe some sleeping pills would help?

Start doing yoga!

I wouldn't advise sleeping pills, even prescription ones that claim to be out of your system are still in it for the first few hours after waking.

Plus, trying to kick them is the worst, because your body won't remember how to fall asleep without your new cute dependency. I know this after a hellish week insomniac 6AM'ers, after I had stopped taking the pills --and was only on them for a month or two originally! The pharmeceutical companies want this to happen so you never get off them. Screw that.

Excercising/yoga is good like WWIU said, if you can stick with it.

Last night I slept really badly. I went to bed just after 10 and slept fine until maybe 2. Then maybe I woke up once more a little while later. Then some freaky WWII violent Russian-German homo-erotic dream woke me up around 4 and I ended up having very depressing thoughts that kept me awake until about 6, just after my alarm went off. Then I slept like a log until 8, and got to work at 9, like a slacker.

I'm a mess.

The worst part of the whole thing was that damn dream. It freaked me out in several ways. I knew I was going to have to kill the Russian who was going to kill me, but first he started making out with his German prisoner on a couch. I'd have gone out-of-my-mind berserk if he had come anywhere near me.

It sounds like one of b4r's fantasies some how made it into your dream. Was the German wearing leather boots and carrying a riding crop?

Seriously, sleep disturbance is a symptom of depression.

Or stress. Anytime I have more than 2 assignments due in a week or have a series of exams in the same week, I have trouble sleeping.

erratic sleep cycle is due to many factors combined in the end.

are you hyperactive during the day , do you eat right before going to sleep , do you dream a lot ( hyperactive sleep ) , are you on some medication or have some kind of condition from childhood like asthma.

try meditation before sleeping , breathing exercises. close your eyes , relax and start chanting some kind of hymn/ sound like Om or listen to some soothing music from headphones. the doctor should be the last resort as they mostly will prescribe sleeping pills which should only be a temporary solution but becomes addictive.
