Prolapsed disc - anyone have any good pain remedies

So have had this since August last year, its a large on that either will heal in 4yrs or I have to have surgery to get rid of it before then (which I would prefer to avoid because of the risks of being paralysed)

So I can't take anti-imflamitory tablets because due to a car accident years ago and taking them for about 18months burnt holes in my stomach lining and also in my esophagus so thats that out the question, shame because thats what works best.

Paracetamol don't really cut the mustard, also can't take aspirin same as above too risky.

Keeping active down the gym helps but my job like alot of jobs, involves alot of sitting which irritates my disc and can't really get around that.

Just wondered if anyone knew of other methods to ease it????

Where is the pain located?

I have sciatica that I think is disk related. The things that have helped me most are:

--Strengthening my core muscles through exercise.

--Sleeping always on my back with a pillow under my knees. I know, not very sexy when you're with a partner, but...that has helped tremendously. I was always a side sleeper, but I realized it was putting me out of alignment.

Ooh thanks, yes sciatica is disc related. I get that pain from my bum down the right leg, horrid.

I am working on my core muscles but didn't know about the pillow thing so will try that. Thank you.

Glad to help. Another thing I do, is I sleep on a firm mattress for the support, but I got a temperpedic mattress pad, you know, with that memory foam? It makes my joints feel better.

Does it help at all if you stretch? Here are some stretches that have helped me (don't do them if it feels wrong or painful, obviously)

1. Sit on a chair and cross right leg over left so your ankle is on your knee. Gently lean forward while pressing down on the right knee. Don't force this too far, just do it gently. Repeat with other leg. This stretches outer ham string.

2. Sit on the floor and put left leg straight out. With your right knee bent, cross it over the left, placing your foot flat on the floor by your outer thigh/hip. Hug your right knee to your chest and look over your right shoulder. Repeat with other leg. This stretches glutes.

3. Lying on the floor pull both knees into your chest and curl into a tight ball to stretch your lower back.

Hard to explain with just words. Hope you can follow these.

Excuse my ingorance here, but is prolapsed the same as herniated?

I know it is controversial, but have you tried chiropractic care?

I've taken this route with headaches and scoliosis (sp?), and I am quite happy with results.

herniated?

Not sure its also called a slipped disc here but think it might be same as herniated, it can be painful and awkward I know that much.

I did have Osteopathy on it but it didn't help also had Accupunture too.
