So I am having one a week just to keep my holiday tan up until Xmas party festivities.

Do you think this is ok, I like a natural tan rather than the lotions although do use the ones that are also body lotions.

But getting sun makes my freckles come out and looks nicer than bottle job.

Surely no more harmful than sitting under the sun for two weeks on a holiday?

It will age you, and it is more harmful than sitting under the sun for the same amount of time. I repeat: it will age you. It's estimated that 90% of visible ageing/wrinkles are caused by sun radiation. Why would you go out of your way to expose yourself to that when you already get more than enough on a day to day basis?

I don't like those beds. Feels like I am in a microwave.

Once I tried that airbrush tan. I had to be all one color for a wedding.

That was kind of cool. Like standing in a car wash. The process took less then a minute. It lasted for 2 weeks or more.

I am in the UK, we get no sun now until well lets face it we get very little sun here full stop.

Also I tend to get a little SAD in the winter months so having the odd one for light therapy actually lifts my mood.

Even in the UK you get sun damage all the time. There are two kinds of sun radiation -- UVB rays and UVA rays. UVB rays tend to depend more on location, time of day and cloud coverage, but UVA rays penetrate clouds and windows. So even on a rainy day walking around you get a lot of sun damage. This is why derms advice people to wear sunscreen every day rain or shine. However UVA damage isn't visible until later when it turns up as wrinkles. It doesn't tan you like UVB damage, so you don't realize the damage you're getting until it's too late. Sunbeds give you a huge dose of UVB AND UVA damage. Keep in mind that any tan, no matter how light, is a sign of damage (it's your body's response to DNA damage in an attempt to protect itself from future damage). There is no such thing as a healthy tan.

You can get light therapy with machines that don't cause UV damage.

I am in the UK too and also suffer with SAD from time to time. I used sunbeds on and off throughout my teens and twenties but am at the age now (a couple of years older than you I see) where I am starting to worry about the ageing process more and more. Sunbeds will not help as far as lines, etc go. I know self-tans don't always look as natural but there are some good ones out there that may be worth trying. Do everything you can to prevent premature (are they premature in your mid 30s?!) wrinkles!

I'm with you on this except for me, it feels like a coffin. ;)

I don't think a couple of visits to a sunbed is a big risk, as long as you're not doing it on a constant basis.

On an episode of Friends, Chandler went to one of those spray-on salons. The booth wasn't working properly, or he didn't understand how to use it, & he would be sprayed on the front side of his body only.

Repeated trips to the salon in attempts to even out the tan ended with the same results. He was dark brown in front, ghostly white on his backside.

Don't use sunbeds! They are dangerous and highly increase your risk of getting skin cancer. There is a huge national campaign here in Australia after a young girl died of skin cancer because she used the solariums a few times. It's like exposing yourself to fifty times the peak UV radiation that happens during the day.

I've used them...

I used them a bit in my 20's and then off and on in the last few years. I had a membership where you had unlimited tanning for the month for a set price. You could "freeze" your membership for any given month, so I'd freeze it during winter but then in the Spring I'd want it again so I'd go back.

Well.....a few months ago I CANCELLED it completely. It was actually hard for me to do. :o Those places can actually be addictive.

(So now I'm all pasty again. But I've been using a powder bronzer on my face for now. )

And YOU! If you have freckles..... you should DEFINATELY NOT go to one.

You're blonde, Brittish and with freckles? No way!

Not that tanning is safe for ANYONE but some people have more built in protection than others and you (personally) have just about squat. I'm half Brittish/Scottish but the other half is European and fortunately I inherited the thicker European skin. Some of my siblings have the thinner, pale pinkish Brittish/Scot skin and they have to avoid the sun or they'll burn---and one of them has had some precancerous lesions removed already---and so did my father.

So no.....I wouldn't go if I were you.

Ebony and Ivory!!

I use tanning beds in the lead up to summer or holidays. I have European skin so tend to keep my tan fairly well all year round and rarely burn.

I don't know. I'm not opposed to them, and I don't think the odd one hurts. But then science proves different. I wouldn't have thought that one per week for the next few weeks is going to do too much damage. But I've been know to be wrong!! :p
