trying to get in shape (major noobie!)

Recommended Posts

hey so i'm 18 and a really poor runner. always have been. however i'm trying to start getting in shape (or trying) and i was thinking that maybe running everyday for like two weeks might be a good idea before i start hitting the gym to lift. am i right about this? also, what sort of distance should i be running to start out. i'm 18, 6'3, and weigh 155 lbs. Thanks!

Running - well best way to start is too run for 1minute rest for 2minutes repeat until you can't do anymore for the first week.

Then run for 1minute rest for 1minute the following week

Then run for 2minutes rest for 1minute etc etc

and build yourself up like that.

Don't worry so much about distance, you want to build up your stamina and lung capacity firstly.

I was a rubbish runner in fact could not run for the bus but I can run about 4km now in around 30-35mins. I also ran the 5km Race for Life this year and last.

ok so i think i get you. first off, you recommend a treadmill it sounds like. next i run for a minute at whatever speed then walk for two minutes to rest. then rinse and repeat?

You can do in a park or on a treadmill, works for either all you need in the park is a stopwatch.

even now sometimes on the treadmill I will run for 7mins the walk on a huge incline for 7mins then run for 2mins on that incline walk for 2 on no/little incline and then run again for 2mins faster but with no incline.

Just to build myself up but also so my body never gets to used to what exercise its gonna get next.

Running on the treadmill is easier than the road.

Road feels much more real to me, there's more to see and, I like to show off and no one see's me at home on a treadmill ;)

Just start off with a jog that is barely more than a walk... you should be able to sustain this pace for a long distance.

Gradually increase that pace each time you run and before you know it you'll be flying.

I think it's important that you don't stop doing the running when you decide to start doing weights... the best workouts have both weights and cardio.

Get the book Body for life by Bill Phillips.

I was too in your shoes. Its simple and to the point and a great place to start. Its done amazing things for me.

Good Luck!
