No, I am not going to starve myself! I know that that is not the answer! I am doing well- I am working out as often as i can get to the gym AT LEAST every other day. I am eating well, eating smaller meals more frequently to keep my metabolism going. I think Im doing well. I feel better after I work out. I have energy and am in a better mood. If i cant get the weight off, at least my mind feels better, and thats probably better for me anyways! I find myself in a place where I feel I have more important things to think about than being 20 pounds lighter for my wedding.

I still want the weight off, but Im ok of i dont get it..

Good for you. Don't stress it, keep working out and eating healthy, and you're going to look your best.

Just please don't develop BDD.

Wonderful - you have a great attitude about this!

Also, please keep in mind that as you start to increase muscle mass and decrease fat, your actual weight on the scale may not change because muscle weighs more per volume than fat does. That means a pound of fat takes up a lot more space than a pound of muscle. So you will likely lose inches even though the weight on the scale won't budge.

Don't the let '20 pounds' be your guide. As you said earlier, the way you feel and the way your clothes fit are a much better guide to whether you are being successful. Don't be discouraged if the scale doesn't show weight loss - you're not really trying to lose weight, you're trying to lose fat.

Starving only makes your body start feeding off of itself...it's the body's defense mechanism against starvation. It produces more fat to try and make up for it. Hence, slower metabolism.

The low carb diet...same effect...it's all from deprivation of glycogen (which we need for fuel)...this is why people stop the diet and gain it all back after....this is why Oprah gained it all back after her liquid diet in the 80's...

Starvation also eats up the muscle, which results in a slowed metabolism, which then makes it much easier to regain the weight. And starvation throws the body in, er, "starvation mode" which means it slows the metabolism down because it tries to conserve calories because it doesn't expect to be fed.

It's not something you can keep up, and it's very bad for your body, and, it ultimately makes it harder to maintain your weight.

You need to focus on:

Build muscles - revs up your metabolism and keeps the calories burning all day (not just during exercise). Do some resistance exercises to build muscles in upper and lower body - dumbbells or resistance bands, lunges and squats with dumbbells, etc.

Do some hi intensity, short duration cardio - burns calories during exercise, and the hi-intensity (where you are really pushing yourself) will keep your metabolism on high for more hours after you stop the exercise, more so than doing loooong sessions of low-intensity cardio. You have to get your heart rate way up there during the exercise.

Food - you have to eat to fuel the muscle build. Starvation will just give you the same flabby body you have with the bulges in all the wrong places, just smaller than it is now, and it will only work for a short while before you start gaining weight because your metabolism is crawling.

Great post, NJ! Thanks for reminding me. In any case, you can huld muscle and eat well and still be hungry. You can't lose wieght if you don't feel any hunger. Maybe a couple pounds, but not 20 lbs, even if you exercise.

Oh, I already have a case of it. Its not severe though. My problem with it is when i look in the mirror (obviously) but for a long time. If i just look to do my make up, no biggie. But if I stand in front of the mirror and stare....then slowly I start to see a 200 pound person... Which i just am not. So Im aware enough to just look in the mirror when i need to, and no longer. I wont stand in front of the mirror after I take my clothes off because then its worse. Its getting better though- used to be a lot worse.

Im learning to be accepting of myself and my body. Thats why Im not going to let it bother me if i cant lose 20 pounds of lose inches. I'd like to....but its not the end of the world if i dont...

Buy a tape measure, and use that as your guide.

Your weight on the scales means nothing. I weigh a little bit more now than I did when I joined my new gym in June, but I have lost inches and my clothes fit better.

I have always been a regular gym goer, but I got a little bit lazy when I got together with my fiance, and following two holidays home and the festive season my jeans got tight.

Three weeks isn't enough time to notice a difference. You need to keep it up for the entire 5 months.

I downloaded some of the free fitness plans from the Womens Health magazine website. They are great, and change every few weeks, which is what your body needs so it doesn't get stuck in a workout rut.

The site also has lots of great dieting/ nutrition tip. Just google it.

Good luck!

I just read the first page so not sure if anyone has mentioned it. Try the www.bodyforlife.com system by Bill Phillips. This system pretty much follows NJ's post. I just like it because it provides the road map and forms for diet and exercise to help me stay on track. It's free, everything is on the website. I also bought his book and used it a lot in the beginning.

It's amazing. Follow the plan for 12 weeks. Take a picture before starting and then once every 3 to 4 weeks and you'll start seeing the results and get excited. The plan is about eating the proper foods and portions AND exercising.

The diet is simple. It's not about starving yourself but about eating 6 small meals a day and one day a week you can eat anything you want, like pancakes, bacon, pizza, whatever you like (just that one day though). The ratio should be 50/40/10 (proteins, carbs, fat) Eating good carbs like whole wheat bread, whole grains, etc. In between meals you can have nutritious bars like Zone perfect bars, healthy shakes as recommended by them or any other reputable brand (comes in handy if you are busy at work). I have done this and it works, it's easy to do once you understand it and figure out the proper foods to buy.

In twelve weeks (3 months) you will be amazed. You don't have to stop there, you can start over again, so you can do two more months before the wedding and your body will continue to change.

:)

Personally, I kept doing it as a way of life. Life gets in the way so I stopped... and now I started again. I can already feel the difference.

I wasnt able to work out most of this week and that made me feel awful....

I have trigeminal neuralgia (damaged nerve in my face) and it was causing me severe pain. Really hard to work out when you feel like that! Anyways.....today it seems to be doing ok so Im going to try to go to the gym. I just hate that i wasnt able to do anything but sit and take major pain meds for 5 days. I hate taking that much medication. So i feel like a blob! I'll just have to work out EVERY day this week and twice as long...

I stuck to the BFL plan for about 2 months and I gotta say I never felt as in control, healthy, and good about myself as I did when I was on that program. I got GREAT results, too.

It's tough to stick to though. The HIIT killed me.

I think I'll start on it agian.

Don't kill yourself about it. Remember, stress slows down your metabolism =).

Sometimes a break can be good for you. Re-energizing and helps you remember why you like working out in the first place.
