Unemployed for 5 months...no one is calling me

Recommended Posts

Please note that these are minimum wage jobs, and I am 20 years old.

At the end of June I decided to quit my job because I realized they wouldn't give me any time off during the summer and I figured I had enough money to do it. I did give them two week's notice, and was very polite about it.

I told my parents (whom I still live with) I would get another job in September, but that didn't happen. I didn't even start applying for jobs until this month.

Now it is the end of November. I started applying for jobs at the beginning of this month, and I have had one interview. The lady was in a big hurry to hire someone, so when I didn't answer the phone later on that day she decided to hire someone else.

Since then I have gone to a job fair, where I applied at several places. It's been over a week now and no one has called me.

I'm just embarrassed by the big gap between my last job and now. What will people think when they see that?

I'm considering going back to the place I quit in June. They are probably looking for seasonal staff and they wouldn't have to train me. There were some things about the job I didn't like, but overall it wasn't terrible.

What's your opinion? Should I go back to my former employer?

I'm just worried what they'll think when they find out I haven't had a job since then...ugh.

First off, WHO cares what anyone else thinks! Really, I mean it's your life and people have their own lives and problems to worry about, plus, you cannot control what anyone thinks to begin with, right? You're living your life for you, not for anyone else. Now, I can understand the worry about what your folks might think, but the bottomline is, you have been active and working hard in finding another job. So, instead of stressing about it, slow down abit and enjoy not working for a little while. If you feel you have to go back to your other job, do so, but don't do it because you're feeling pressured by others...The right job will come your way, so stay positive!

A lot of minimum-wage type jobs hire those who are the most pro-active. They get tons of applications and it usually isn't worth their time to call anyone back as most of the applicants have already found work by the time they do. So if you really want a job, follow your app. up with a phone call. Ask how the status of your application is progressing.

So you dropped out of school for a guy, quit your job because it didn't give you enough time off in the summer, didn't even try to find a job until a few weeks ago, and didn't get a job because you didn't pick up the phone.

Your problem isn't your resume gaps, it's your immaturity.

However, I doubt any minimum wage retailers really care about the maturity of their employees. Just apply everywhere, follow up, be proactive, and soon you'll have a job.

Forget these crap jobs and just go back to school though...
