latefragment
serendip - (sorry to other posters for this being off topic, but) - do you get a lot of time off with your job, or are you in school? I need to get a job where I can do what you do. or go back to school. oh... did you go to prague alone? I was in germany and a bunch of other northern european countries just a few months ago, in august, and I loved it. Germany especially. I love beer, and cars, so ... it was a slam dunk right there. I'm basically a partner at a firm...so if it's not busy season...I can take time off. Yeah I was in prague alone. I love travelling and experiencing new things. Several years ago I quit my job and travelled around europe and Asia for a year. I was alone most of the time....and because I was alone...I forced myself to meet people and it was wonderful. I got to live with a germany family for a couple of weeks after I had met their daughter in Vienna. I got invited to this super fancy dinner by these 2 women...when I was gambling at the monte carlo casino in Monaco.....many many fun memories.
CaliGuy
Right on man. Im headed tahoe for new years. Hoping for more snow!! Dude that should rock. Tahoe + snow = righteous fun!
latefragment
yeah, tahoe rocks! serendip - sorry for continuing to derail the thread - but maybe I can PM you? when you were working your way to partner status were you able to take long vacations as well? or has that come about since you've become a partner? Are you working in the US or in Europe (I'm thinking of moving to Europe where the vacations are very long)? I did quit my job once to go to Paris (I already spoke French) and study, and it was awesome. That is very cool that you quit your job and traveled the world. Did you have any problems finding a job when you got back, or maybe because of your skills/talent/field/industry/connections you were fine? I need a major overhaul to my life... (not that things aren't great, because they are, and I have a lot to be thankful for, but... I can't seem to stay in one place too long) I really want to travel to Russia, anywhere in Africa, and Chile. And I love studying languages...

latefragment
oh dear, I just started another thread in the self-improvement section!!! oops.. well, serendip - answer it wherever you want, if you're still inclined... Yeah frd150, the thought of facing the holidays "alone" kind of sucks... I agree with you. BLECH!!!!! For what it's worth, it's been a few xmases now without an SO for me, so I'm kind of used to it, though it's still slightly lonely. I'm lucky I have friends and family though. Alway thankful for that.
latefragment
on the subject of Tahoe, you can't beat Heavenly. Squaw's pretty good, too, but expensive, but you can still get a lot of the technical stuff in Heavenly... Alpine Meadows and Northstar are nice too.

Alway thankful for that. Its funny to think back to four years ago. That christmas was great even though I was not with anyone. Then the next three were with her and they were amazing. I really have no family here so I was sorta adopted into her family and boy let me tell you, its gonna be tough thinking about all of them on christmas. Im flying home for Christmas to see my folks and grandparents. Should be fun nevertheless due to the fact that there will be snow(hopefully) and grandmas cooking:). Then I come home and three days later I fly to tahoe. Now thats gonna be fun.

Since frd150 is fine with it I worked in NY before but now I work north of the border. I wouldn't get paid more then my vacation time...when I take long periods off. It was fine with me b/c the value I derived from travelling far out match any amount of money I get. When I came back from travelling for a year...I sat around for a while...didn't feel like working. But it's easy for me to get a job anywhere b/c of my experience and field. Life is for...the discovering of new things...what's the point of working if you are not enjoying life. I used to work in the snow industry so I got up there quite a bit. I will say that one of my best days was at alpine medows about four years ago. Chest deep freshies for three days:D. Squaw was mostly closed due to avalanche danger. You know Ive never been to northstar. Ill have to check it out. My buddie said something about going over to heavenly for newyears and getting a room for the night so well see. My friends run shops in the squaw village and ill be staying with them so hopefully i can get a couple of passes. Keep the cost down you know?

latefragment
whatever you do stay away from socal. I went to Mammoth last year and it was GREAT - but everywhere else - big bear, etc., was horrible. I mean we had bad snow last year to begin with, but... That's great that you can bum some free passes off your friend. That means you can get a burger AND fries at the cafeteria. LOL. Or just pack your own pb&J. LOL. And yeah, hang in there this xmas. I think when you're in a serious relationship you get a little spoiled about being with someone. Before becoming single, I was a serial monogamist in serious, long-term relationships for like 5+ years straight ... and it really took a couple years to get my "single" head back on straight. I mean, learning how to date, was like, ... learning a different language. You have to "reset your head". Insane. Serendip - I'm impressed you were able to work your way up the ranks and make partner even while taking long vacations? that's incredible. That means you're a genius or something! Or were you in the same firm this whole time, and they knew you, and approved of the time off, or did you change jobs, etc., and... did you have a lot of cash saved up/investments in order to finance your yearlong trip, and of course a cushion upon your return from Europe/Asia... If you don't mind me asknig, what age range are you in (sorry if it's too private)? or .? Did you pick your career based on, or in spite of, wanting to travel?

No I quite my job before I took a year off...then I got back...bum around for a while...then decided to get a job again. I'm in my 30's. I was a philosophy and literature major in Uni. Then my parents insisted that I go to grad school for business b/c I wouldn't get a job with my undergrad degree. After I got out of grad school...I pissed my parents off by not working for a couple of years....I ended up just travelling in Canada and the US. It was fun....alot of interesting people. Snow is great with more on the way but in typicall so cal fashion it will be 90 degrees next week:rolleyes:. http://www.bearmountain.com/index_winter.php http://www.snowsummit.com/index_winter.php And of course mammoth! http://www.mammothmountain.com/ Just a little distraction And yeah, hang in there this xmas. sedgwick
hanging out with friends, cooking, knitting, opening gifts. i live far from my family so i spend holidays with a group of friends, and it's way better. this was my tradition before him, and he didn't come last year because he was out of town, so thankfully it'll just be me and my good friends like always, with no memories of him attached. serendip
Does christmas have more effect on people who have broken up? I mean last year I spent christmas with the ex....we got into some arguments b/c it was the first time we saw each other since she told me she sort of cheated on me. But we did have a decent time overall. But to me christmas means nothing in the sense I don't have anymore sentimental thoughts of the ex then any other day. I think more about travelling during christmas then anything else. Do you think my ex would feel it more b/c she is christian and last year on christmas eve...we went to her church to sing christmas carols...

She will think about it but everyone is different in the way they handle things. Like my ex...i thought that she would have more feeling during this time but some people are more capable turning off the switch than others. Like you I try my best to keep my mind on other things.
