I've been chewing up my food and spitting it out... well, only the junk foods.

About a month ago I started chewing food up that I crave, then spitting it out into the garbage. I'm very heathy usually, but I always felt deprived on every diet that I have tried. I need to loose about 20 pounds. Now I can have junk foods without putting on the pounds. In fact I have lost weight. I know it sounds gross, trust me, I don't do it around people, but something tells me I'm not the only one.

I would love any opinions to make sure I am mildly sane here. It seems harmless, but if it's not I'd like to know. Btw, i still eat salads and protein, i just spit out the breads and cheeses, and sugars. Alright, if this works for anyone I would like to know as well, great, bye!

Um...I use to do this when I had an eating disorder. Not saying that you do because everybody's situation is different.

I also use to eat the creme out and throw away the donut. But I swallowed. :D

My sister got into a really bad habit of doing this many years back ... until the kids started imitating her at the dinner table. Don’t know if this qualifies as any sort of eating disorder, but it’s the first time since my sister told us the story that I’ve ever heard of anyone else doing this!

I would be a little concerned about this if I were you. It sounds like something that could turn into an eating disorder, even if it's not one yet.

Well, the problem with diets is that you eventually go off them and regain your weight, because you're finally "free" from it and very tired of feeling deprived. The best way to lose weight is learning better habits and making them your permanent way of eating. It doesn't mean you can't have junk food occasionally. Count the calories and allow for it.

For instance, if you really want to eat a 500 calorie sandwich at a fast food joint, while being on a 1200 calorie diet, ensure that the rest of the meals of the day are lighter than they would usually be.

To lose weight, you need to consume less calories than you use up in a day, and from that point of view, the calories could come from McDonalds, a bag of candy, or from healthful foods and it doesn't matter at all.

Of course the effects junk food has on your body can be devastating due to the astronomical amounts of fat, sodium, preservatives, etc, and I wouldn't recommend doing it more than once a week, but why not treat yourself to the occasional "junk food" craving?

It will keep you from getting tired of dieting and you can actually enjoy the food without feeling guilty or having to spit it out. Just plan ahead and be reasonable about what you eat and there's no reason why you can't indulge once in a while.

Incidentally, breads and cheeses are hardly "junk" from a nutritional point of view. You just have to choose the right kinds. Try to go for whole grain breads and low-fat or fat free cheeses and eat them moderately (particularly cheese) for guilt-free enjoyment.

Spitting food can quickly turn into an eating disorder before you even realize. Learning to eat properly and moderately will work wonders in your weight loss plan and keep you from feeling deprived.
