I feel like i am wasting my life away

Recommended Posts

Well im a 21 year old college student and i really feel like i am wasting my life away. All i do is go to school, work, lift weights and then train MMA. While my friends are going abroad to study, like Germany and Australia. They are all enjoying life and getting to do these all these cool things. Granted that their parents are rich and they get to do basically travel. I on the other hand have to work for my stuff.

My other friends have met a lot of new friends and are partying it up and living life to the fullest while im at work working my bum off.

Don't get me wrong i am not hating on them, but i just really feel like that i am wasting my life away with my daily routine. God gave me life and im scared that i am wasting this gift from him. Has anyone else felt this way? Is this what you would call a "mid-life crisis"? please share your experience so that i may get something out of it :)

I think everyone goes through this phase at least once in their life.

I say keep practicing your MMA and then go fight Kimbo Slice and kick his butt then you will be rich and famous

There's absolutely nothing wrong with doing the responsible and mature thing at 21. In fact there are a lot of 21 year old graduates who are working, struggling to secure a job in their field, finding out they hate their field and wind up working in retail or something other.

I'm sure being young grants people the freedom to **** up because people expect it of them. But it doesn't mean you have to follow in the footsteps of others. Who knows in a year from now you could be making a 6 digit salary while they're still getting drunk at bars.

Thats where it hits me the most. Although my friends are being like nails and getting hammered away (Pause for laughter) and being able to travel etc etc. They are still able to get A's and B's for their classes. They have internships and just look like they are able to live life the way they want but also have the success.

I on the other hand cannot get internships because of my major. (Biology). It just sort of feels like im going in the wrong direction. Don't get me wrong I LOVE LIFE, i love God, family and friends but i just feel like i am missing something that causes me to feel im like wasting my life.

Here's some food for thought:

I know the feeling somewhat. I wouldn't go wild, but you should figure out how to balance work and fun. I'm 27 now, but when I was in school about 5 yrs. ago, I put fun on the backburner, and now I do regret it. I was in a much tougher curriculum than most of my friends (engineering), so I felt like I had to sacrifice going to parties and different events to get through. I'm changing careers now, so I'm not even going to be in the field I had my degree in. I'm glad I got my degree, because it will help me in my new field, but sometimes I wonder if it was worth missing out on what I did.

On the other hand, don't compare yourself to others too much. A lot of people try to live up to an image they have for themselves, which quite often is not sustainable. I think the best thing you can ask yourself is whether or not you think you think the work you will be doing will bring you satisfaction and long-term happiness. If so, don't worry about what everyone else is doing. If you're not, figure out what you need to do to change it.

Just remember, 5, 10, 20 yrs. down the road, the people having fun now may be broke, divorced, have multiple kids, and be bouncing from job to job. You, on the other hand, will be a rich bachelor, doing work you enjoy, and traveling the world having all the fun you want. :)

The one who works harder evolves beyond the person that works less. All of the hardships you're going through are just getting you ready for the big day where it all pays off. After all, Jealousy only puts more and more hatred in your life, making you just another "devil's advocate." You should listen to these peoples' advice.

I wanna thank you guys for somewhat showing me the light. Now I look back i really do enjoy training MMA and lifting weights.

And you guys are right. I tried to make my image the same as my friends. Travelling and partying and such. I guess when everyone came home from break, I wanted to be the one telling the great/funny stories and not the listener.

I also saw some pictures of myself in high school and recently looked in the mirror and wow...anyone need to do some laundry ;)? The washboard is out. haha. (Thanks to MMA and weightlifting).

Again, i guess i should live life the way i want to and not how other people live them. :)

Well said! I wasn't as smart as you at 21. I have this knack of learning the hard way, and it kinda hurts. Don't do that. Sounds like you have an excellent life so far, and at your age, you're successful, I hope you are feeling really proud of yourself, as you should. Props to you!
