johan
It looks like the family won't be getting together today. It's snowing pretty hard and my parents live in a hard place to get to when the weather is bad. I sold my truck, so I'm left with wimpy cars and no four-wheel-drive. So I'll be here if anyone needs any advice on stuff or just to go off-topic on a thread somewhere. Or maybe I'll amuse myself other ways.
2sunny
you should be here - it's 70 degrees at 8:30 in the am and my boys just went to the beach to go surfing! big din din later with the family...
ElvenPriestess
I'll keep you company. My family is thousands of miles away, my H and I don't get along, (divorce talk, etc.) and all I'm doing is sitting here on LS to offer my best advice to those who need it. lindya
Hurray! I'm not snowed in, but I might as well be. Out in the country, and have consumed too much champagne to drive anywhere. I'll try to think of a problem for you to solve, Johan. Okay. You might have heard this one before. If not, try not to cheat by googling for answers. You're stuck in a room which has two doors. One door opens to freedom, the other door opens to a sudden death. One guard always tells the truth and the other guard always lies. You don't know which guard to believe. You don't know which door opens to freedom. You are entitled to ask one guard one question which he will answer with a simple yes or no. What is the question you should ask in order to ensure you get out of there alive? Edited December 25, 2007 by lindya
Storyrider
Here's an easier one in the mean time, J. Do you know if they're letting planes land? My parents are supposed to touch down at 3:00 PM.
Author johan
Here's an easier one in the mean time, J. Do you know if they're letting planes land? My parents are supposed to touch down at 3:00 PM. Here you go: http://www.fly.faa.gov/flyfaa/usmap.jsp And just for you: Due to WEATHER / SNOW-ICE, there is a Traffic Management Program in effect for traffic arriving at Storyrider's Nearest International Airport. This is causing some arriving flights to be delayed an average of 2 hours and 5 minutes. To see if you may be affected, select your departure airport and check "Delays by Destination". Delays by Destination: No destination-specific delays are being reported. General Departure Delays: Because a traffic management program is delaying some arriving flights, departing flight schedules may be affected. Check with your airline to determine if your flight is affected. General Arrival Delays: Due to WX:SNOW/ICE, arrival traffic is experiencing airborne delay between 16 minutes and 30 minutes and increasing.

I guess just shoving the guard through the door and watching what happens to him is not allowed? This is one of those puzzles where the answer is embarrassingly simple. I'll figure it out sooner or later.

Storyrider
South. West of Castle Rock. Mine just called. They're halfway here and delayed in Charlotte. I was thinking if you ask the lying guard the right question, then either answer will tell you what to do. The problem is, I can't figure out what the question would be. How about, "Here's fifty bucks," which door is it? Or, alternately "I'll show you my tits." That may not work for you, though. Or me either, come to think of it.

Do your parents live west? Here is another good one. http://flightaware.com/live/airport/KCLT That link is specific to Charlotte, but you can focus on any airport. If you know the flight number you can actually track their flight. On the left there is a place to fill in the airline and flight number. This site provides a revised ETA, I believe, based on how the flight is progressing. I doubt it will account for the 16 minute hold time the FAA site mentioned. So you can add that on yourself. HokeyReligions
A family in my neighborhood did not celebrate Christmas with gifts or decorations or any kind of special meal. Mac & cheese and coldcuts. They have no family to visit or to visit them; no close friends - although they did call a couple of people just to wish them a sincere Merry Christmas. It is a great day though. Their stomach's are full, their home is warm, their bills are paid, and the washing machine works and they have laundry to do today. The sound of the washing machine keeps the beat to Joy To The World! They have each other for now and that's all they asked for or wanted. They are happier than a lot of people who feel pressured to buy gifts and entertain or obligated to show care for others. Their celebration is inside them, not draped over a mantle or wrapped under a tree. Their greatest gift to each other this morning was seeing the other and hearing their voice say Merry Christmas. One person they called was someone not so lucky as them. That person lives alone - but spent most of her day on the phone with others who called to say hello and let that person know that she's has friends who care.

That person lives alone - but spent most of her day on the phone with others who called to say hello and let that person know that she's has friends who care. I think these people are celebrating just fine. There's certainly plenty of spirit in how they chose to spend the day and how much appreciation they have for what they have. Many people are so distracted with the logistics and the bad family vibes and the gifts and the cooking, etc. that they never get to sit back and have any spirit at all. In fact, a lot of people have Christmas resentment, and I know how that feels. I'm guilty of that. So that's great, Hokey. Enjoy your holiday.
Storyrider
Sorry you have to work today, Star. I'm logging off to clean house and cook, so I can build up some good Christmas resentment, er, I mean spirit. Pass the spirits. Or at least a Guinness.

Nemo
I was thinking if you ask the lying guard the right question, then either answer will tell you what to do. The problem is, I can't figure out what the question would be. I remember seeing this on an old Doctor Who episode with the crazy-long-scarf Doctor. Eye of Horus, or something maybe something like that. Or something or nothing. Story has already cracked it. If you ask the Truth dude which door, the answer is the right door. If you ask the Liar-Liar-Pants-On-Fire dude which door, the answer is the wrong door. But if you ask either dude which door the other dude would advise you to take to get your freedom... (Say you ask the Truth dude.) Truth dude responds that LLPOF would tell you to take the Death door - he says nothing, but points. (The truth.) (Say you ask the LLPOF dude.) LLPOF dude responds that Truth dude would direct you towards the Death door - he points. (A lie.) No matter who you ask, they both point to the Door of Death. Then, like johan said, you can shove one of the guards through the other door - just to make absolutely sure. Edited December 25, 2007 by Nemo
