PWSX3
Not sure if this has been asked before but my W drinks a LOT of pop/soda & I would really like to see her quit but she says that is one things she enjoys & won't do. She drinks Diet pop/soda now because she said there are no calories or sugar in it but yesterday I was watching this TV show & the guy was saying that if you drink regular pop/soda that you have a 33% chance of gaining weight, but if you drink diet pop/soda you have a 55% chance of gaining weight. I have heard that diet is a lot worse for you then regular so why is that? I stopped drinking pop/soda over a year & a half & sure at first water didn't taste good at all, but you get used to it just like anything else, plus I usually don't drink much when I eat so that also helps. I wish there was something I could do but I know you can't make someone do anything so I just watch her drink her pop. It is kind of sad to hear her excuses on why she drinks pop or I only drink a couple a day. She doesn't count the liter as 5 or 6 but just one.
Citizen Erased
I haven't ever heard that you are more likely to put on more weight when drinking diet, but perhaps it may have something to do with the person thinking they aren't have such a large intake of sugar into their daily diet, so they are more likely to eat junk food? I have no idea lol. I know I was addicted to Coke, and diet coke helped me along when I stopped drinking it. But it should not be a complete substitute. Water is the only thing which can help. Diet just helped with the cravings a bit But if she fails to see it as an issue then you will have a terrible time of convincing her to stop. And if you keep pushing it, then she will just get more defensive and less likely to listen at all. She knows deep down it is a problem, I assume she hasn't been living under a rock. Only she can stop herself from drinking soft drink/soda/pop whatever you call it lol.
Author PWSX3
No I don't push her to stop, she is going to have to learn that one on her own.
KenzieAbsolutely
when i switched from regular to diet, i lost a considerable amount of weight without changing anything else. i doubt this was a coincidence, but who knows?
a4a
Because if you drink a diet drink you can go ahead and have that second piece of cake. diet or reg..... soda sucks for ya. Perhaps bring some of that flavored water into the house?
Author PWSX3
Because if you drink a diet drink you can go ahead and have that second piece of cake. diet or reg..... soda sucks for ya. Perhaps bring some of that flavored water into the house? She just bought a case of water for our son, he puts those flavor drink packets in the water, we have a gallon of cold water in the fridge, we have orange juice, fruit juice, soymilk & regular milk in the fridge but she isn't interested in any of that. I don't ask anymore, don't care anymore. When she hits bottom she can fight her way back up by herself. I was just wondering why the diet is so much worse for you, just for my own knowledge. Trialbyfire
Has she ever had fruit juice flavored carbonated drinks, like Koala Springs? It might be an interim step, instead of quitting, outright. Sodas are so bad for you, loaded with sugar, sometimes caffeine. There are no redeeming qualities in softdrinks. jerbear
High Fructose Corn Syrup gets stored and caffine dehydrates. Try to avoid foods that have it. The body has a hard time trying to digest the corn syrup, so what happens is it get stored! Caffine tends to cause the body to dehydrate. Just avoid them if you can, juices have more natural sugars versus the processed stuff.

To by honest I think the biggest reason she drinks it is because it is something she is in control of, it has nothing to do with what is going to happen 5 years down the road? Even our MC has told her it would be better if she would find something else to drink. She is a pop/sodaholic & that is the bottom line.

Ah...is there a way to provide her with control in other aspects of her life, which would cause less of a need for this form of minor self-destructive control? I don't know your story PWSX3, but why is she striving for control? Are you attempting to mould her too much to the image you want or is she a control freak?
johan
Waiting until she hits bottom is equivalent to waiting until she is diagnosed with some irreversible health problem. My aunt has been a Coke freak all her life, and ended up getting some kind of serious throat problem that required treatment. That apparently wasn't bottom though. She's back to drinking it all the time. So we'll see what kind of health problem pops up next. That "control" thing is a strawman fallacy. She could drink basically anything and be perfectly in control of her choice. Some people just don't really think much about the effects their choices have on their bodies. You can probably list 15 other things she does that are equally damaging, if not more. I occasionally drink a Coke. I won't touch anything labeled "diet" though. The cloying, fake, sweet taste is repulsive.
Jilly Bean
There is some scientific speculation that artificial sweeteners stimulate the appetite. Additionally, she is probably continuing to overeat in other areas, since she thinks she is *saving* calories from drinking diet soda. It's a double whammy.
johan
It's a double whammy. I agree. It's like the Diet Coke is one guy, and the increased appetite is the other guy, and she's just getting it from both sides. And the best you can hope for is some nice pictures you can share with your friends.

Some artificial sweetners do make it worse. Just because it is a lower calorie diet soda some people drink more of it. The net would be more versus less. Also some of the sweetners taste really funny, aspartame, sucrolose, sucrose, fructose, etc... (chemical names versus trade names ) Here is an idea for the OP, make your own soda with seltzer water, fruit juice concentrate, or fruit juice syrup. There are even kits the one can buy to make your own soda.
AriaIncognito
The problem with telling people to switch to juices instead is you really have to read the juices label, because the majority of the juices out there have added high fructose corn syrup, so if you drink that as a substitute, you might as well have the coke. I recently started looking at juice labels, to find one to try that didn't have it in there. I ended up with welchs polmegranite white grape juice. It was really good. Of course juices, natural or not, can still be high in carbs since they contain sugar naturally as well.
