So, I'm a guy at 6'0 at 145 pounds, would you people say that is too thin? I've tried gaining weight over the past few years, but was unsuccessful because of stomach problems. I'm wondering if certain foods would help me gain weight quicker, if anyone's got any suggestions that would be great.

You're on the thin side but not unhealthy. It also depends on your age. If you're a teenager or early twenties guy, this isn't that unusual, unless you're working weights and can't bulk up.

Yes, that's pretty thin for a guy your height.

Work out with weights to build muscle mass. Do full body, compound movements that build up the large muscles in your legs and back, as well as arms and chest. You will have to eat a lot of healthy foods (including healthy fats), with an emphasis on protein for the muscle building, in order to gain the right kind of weight (not fat).

Age has a lot to do with weight.

At 25 while dating, I was as low as 145 (stress and mono) and six foot. But even when I was healthy, I never could get over 155#. I lifted weights and was fairly strong. I was lean as they come though. I had the six pack abs and "ripped" muscles. My BMI must have been a negative number though.

Those days are gone. I still lift weights but can pack on the pounds quicker. Granted, I did look thin, but now I am at 175# and still 6 foot. But I am 43. I have been as high as 204# ...and that was NOT muscle. In my late twenties and early thirties I think I looked the best at around 170# which was mostly muscle but some fat from the wife's good cooking. As for that BMI...well, we don't even want to know.

SO, as my dad (who was also thin in HIS twenties) said, "Just wait...you will wish you were thin again one day."

And as always, father knows best.

That's thin. My H was that same weight back when he went into the army. He's also 6 ft. You'll gain weight over the years more than likely. But some people never do (like me.) I've been underweight my whole life. I did get serious and went on a diet in 2005.

What I did was start eating every 2 1/2 to 3 hours. You asked for food suggestions. Nuts, avocados, shakes, ice cream, dried fruit, etc. Look for foods that pack a lot of calories into a small amount of food - calorie dense.

You don't have to stuff yourself. Just start with eating more often. Say you eat three times a day, increase that to 4 times and then to 5 and 6 times a day. And you don't have to eat full meals for those other "feedings" either.

Took me about 5 months but I did gain 10 pounds.

Unfortunately, I lost it all in 2006. I had a lot of changes and stress in my life. We moved, etc. But here I am three years after I started that diet in Jan. of '05 and I'm starting it again. Going for 10 to 15 pounds. I started a week ago.

You can do it. It's kind of tough at first but after a couple of weeks, it just becomes a habit and your body actually starts craving food after a couple of hours. Try it and you'll see.

Mustang Sally

Funny.

You are the same height and weight as me, but I'm a middle-aged female who has had four kids.

I doubt anyone who saw me would say I'm too thin.

But, obviously, guys and gals have different makeup when it comes to normal body amounts of muscle mass vs fat mass.

Personally, I'm trying to tone up a bit...lose some thigh/booty-fat. I agree with those who have suggested that you try to bulk up with muscle mass. You might try weight-lifting, etc. It's ok to be slender. If you are worried about it, try to gain muscle mass rather than just "mass." You'll be thankful for that when you get to be my age, male OR female.

It's also frame reliant. Some people have small frames, others, large ones. Don't be so concerned about looking like everyone else, as long as you're healthy.

Myself, I've always preferred a long, lean body shape in a guy. :)

Some say I am thin! (got my pic in my profile now for a LIMITED TIME!)

Are you happy with yourself? Sounds corny, but that is what is most important!

And with guys...a good looking guy you can get anytime! I like one with smarts any day!

Cheers!

Wow.. Wow.. Josie you're cute...

OP - I would say that you are thin for your height but when you have a high metabolism it's hard to gain weight... I know.. been there.. (younger)..

No matter what you take it won't help (I used to take those malts with thousands of calories on top of my meals, nothing worked)...

How old are you? If you are young.. don't worry you'll gain weight as you get older.. I did... ;)

Now I want to lose a few pounds... it's hard... but I know it's easier to lose than to gain.. been there.

Just be happy don't worry about it.. you're healthy, that's the main thing.. some women loooove thin men.... If I were you I wouldn't worry about it.

:)

Oh Lizzie! You are so kind!

I'm not as cute as that puppy you show!

And hopefully I'm cute enough for one person on here in particular!!! LOL!

Lately though, I have been having to watch my sweets!

I have one pair of jeans I HATE and NEVER wear, but I won't through them out!

However, I wear them once a week just to see if I have gained anything size wise.

This works out because I didn't stretch them out nor am I familiar with them.

Just a thought!

Cheers!

You can gain weight but it would take alot of hard work. If you just want to fatten up (which I wouldnt recomend) and dont care if its muscle. eat lots of doe nuts and Ice cream, and sugar loaded breads. If you want to gain muscle weight your going to need to work out, take some weight gainer proteins, and eat atleast 4 times a day. You could probably get to 160 or somethin

Sorry, but this seemed a little OT. Is there a connection I'm missing here?

Anyway, thx for the advice everyone. I was mildly successful in gaining weight a few years back, gained about ten pounds. But couldn't keep it up because it was too expensive! Am going to try and experiment with different diets or whatever.

I am currently weight lifting, mostly everyday. It's strange, from what people tell me, I shouldn't have to worry about my looks at all, yet I keep worrying and obsessing about them. I suppose you have to stop somewhere, but I'm far from reaching my body's peak.

maybe this is what JossieMccoy was talking about. Look man, I've been alot skinier then you have, and the secret to gaining weight isnt all that mysteriose, you have to force yourself to eat, and eat alot. There are plennty of work out books that can give great detail in achieving this. Just working out isnt going to do it. You need a plan. If I can gain weight any one can.

Just to clear up the "shouldn't have to worry about looks" thing, I meant that facially, I've been told I'm quite attractive. So, this quest for a better body has more to do with me than anyone else's perception as I do just fine with the body I have.

Anyway, I know what you mean, having a plan is the best option and I'm working on that atm. And I realize that diet is the most important part of body building, and that'll be the most difficult part for me, so I'm not just focusing on the working out aspect of things.

Ouch!

The name is Josie McCoy!!!

Not JOSSIE?!? They never made a cartoon character named that, at least in my lifetime!!!

Just be happy with yourself is all im saying! If you change to make someone else happy physically, that's just wrong!

Don't forget that you need only 500 cals extra a day to gain a pound a week. That's doable isn't it?
