How to tell if a girl is bulimic?

Recommended Posts

Theres this girl that is in my college class that I have been talking to quite a bit the last few weeks. I have known who she is for probably 3-4 years since back in high school. I mentioned about her to a few of my friends and they replied saying they had heard she is bulimic. I will admit that she is thin (id guess about 115-120lbs) but she is not anorexic looking. She is about 5'7". I know a few years back in high school she was a little bigger in size (im guessing 135lbs) when she was on the softball team and volleyball team and excersizing all the time.

Since I have been talking to her she has not mentioned anything about her weight or eating. We usually just talk about random things each day. I know one sign is depression and stress. She recently got out of a serious relationship so I cannot say the depression is caused from eating. She seems very social and always hangs around her friends. I just don't want to ask her and offend her or anything. I also don't want to ask any of her friends as they will tell her. My friends are just going on what they have heard. This is why I am coming here to see what signs I should look for.

Another thing is about the weights. I am not good at guessing women's weights so they are just guesses. I can just tell that she has lost some weight and has been thin for awhile now.

Bulimics aren't usually as skinny as anorexics because they take in a lot of calories a day while an anorexic eats next to nothing. But they do exercise excessively at times and their weight can definitely fluctuate. But they are usually within normal weight ranges.

Three things to look for are bloodshot eyes or carrying visine when you know she's not a pothead, chipmunk cheeks and neck glands, and abrasions on pointer fingers that resemble teeth scrapes.

I also understand that someone with a severe case of bulemia has ruined teeth because the acid from the vomitus/bile eats away at the enamel.

Well I have noticed that she has very nice smile. Bright white straight teeth. I believe she does excersize regulary but I don't know any more than that.

Its usually obvious behind the smile at first. It takes awhile for it to be noticable from the front.

You mentioned depression? what makes you think she is depressed?

Also- if she has just come out of a long term R, that could make her lose weight. Every break up I have gone through has made me lose weight.

Well she has been the same size for some time now at least a year or more. She doesn't seem depressed during class or anything I just saw on her myspace her status is set to depressed. I think she might just not be showing it but I am not really sure.

I don't know if myspace status is enough to support a diagnosis of depression. just a thought.

Even if you are the dumper, coming out of a long term R is tough.

Yea that is true. I just mentioned depression since I knew it was a symptom. I also mentioned depression since the ending of a relationship too. Because if she was not getting out of a relationship and was depressed it would be different.

I got my first cavity right after I had my first baby. Having children was worse for my teeth than being a bulimic ever was. Although maybe I was more prone to cavities because of the bulimia...who knows?

If her teeth are very white and nice doesn't necessarily mean she's not a bulimic. She could brush afterwards and whiten them and see a dentist regularly.

If you want a visible sign look for callouses and/or scrapes on her fingers at the knuckles, usually the pointer or middle.

Brushing after you vomit is worse for your teeth, because you are scrubbing all the stomach acid into your teeth and making the erosion worse. Best to just rinse with water.

Sorry, just being a little dental nerd.

What if you rinse first and then brush?

When I use to "purge" most times it was pretty solid anyway because of all the food I consumed. And I think the stomach acid was soaked up by the food. Taking in lots of water was important or else it would have the consistency of a poop going through the esophagus and out the other end. It was like an undigested reverse poop.

Sorry, just being a little descriptive yet informative. :D

I have heard that because bulimic's purge so often, they can end up with teeth mark's on their knuckles, so I think that would be a sign for sure.

AP:)
