Star Gazer
I've had a neck crick for over a week now. A-N-N-O-Y-I-N-G. I look like I have had polio or something, all stiff necked. What's the best way to fix this? Get a deep tissue massage, or visit a chiropractor, or...?

If you want to go see a pro, I'd recommend a good physical therapist. FYI too much time spent on the computer can cause a stiffy.
Tripper
I've had good results with Chiropractic however there has been risk documented from neck adjustments. I've had better results with A.R.T., Active Release Techniques and my chiro now does this mostly. Google it and find a practitioner in your area.
BeautifulMystique
I've had experience with a Chiro and it has always been good. Maybe I should get the tempur-pedic pillow Amaysngrace suggested!

What's the best way to fix this? Get a deep tissue massage, or visit a chiropractor, or...? I'm all about massage therapy. I went to massage school when I was younger -- couldn't handle touching strangers so much, but I learned a lot. There isn't the risk associated with massage, as there is with chiro....you just have to scope it out and get a really good therapist who is licensed, don't just go to a spa. Also - try practicing yoga regularly , or stretching...I sprained my traps a few years ago and my neck was hella stiff. I had to go to physical therapy and learned some stretches to do regularly and they are a life saver...I still have neck probs to this day!
Author Star Gazer
B_O, maybe you know what body part I'm talking about here. It seems to start at the base of my head/top of my neck on the left, and travels down my neck slightly into my shoulder and down into my shoulder blades. At first it was so sharp that it felt like it was a nerve, now I can actually feel the muscle. Is that a particular muscle or...? I get massages once a month, and I'm about due. I think I'll go and get one this weekend, and follow it up (maybe) with some PT. It's gotten better, but it's not going away! Grr.
sb129
Massage all the way. I have had both, and I need constant back and neck therapy due to the nature of my job. Chiro is too risky IMO, and I have heard of cases of people having carotid arterty rupture and spinal nerve damage from chiropractors. I spent a small fortune on chiro treatment, and had no success. Its funny you should mention this because I have just got home from the physio where I have had deep tissue massage and manipulation, and I feel alot better.
amaysngrace
You sound like your scales are tightened up. Scalenes. Isometrics helps too.
sb129
Its the trapezius and rhomboid muscles too, I have the exact same problem. The focus of pain is tight muscle fibres (also called a knot) that need to be released. My previous PT used to treat the English football team.... grrrowl..

sb129
But isn't that really just soccer everywhere else? Yes, yes, and I have no interest at all in it..... except the hands of my exPT have been some places. Six degrees of separation and all that!
amaysngrace
I think soccer players are really hot. I prefer them to football players. Football players grunt. And some of them look like little pigs to me playing in the mud on a rainy game day. Oink oink.

I don't have much experience with your kind of football players, but they sound alot like rugby players- thuggish and brawny and unattractive. Sorry SG- back on topic. How are you doing?
