Tormented
Good topic! For me it's..."With or Without You" by U2, "Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Bonnie Tyler "Chains" by Fleetwood Mac....and a good little oldie "Piece of my Heat" by Janis Joplin. There are others but the above grabs my heart everytime I hear them. ~T~
marlena
I will survive - Gloria Gaynor . That song should become the anthem for people whose hearts are recently broken.
barbarella
I have two songs that, while pretty old, have always gotten me through: Slightly upbeat, but really good "you suck" song: I wanna be around: - I prefer the version without Bono, but you take what you can get... If your ex calls/texts/emails/contacts you after the breakup: Cry me a river: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHVMxBkW0CQ - usually by Ella Fitzgerald or Harry Connick Jr. Both of these are fun great to sing along to, and have enough of a "you get what you deserve" vibe that they, to me, are actually uplifting. Aboohoo
Wyrllish - im so glad you like the song! As i said before its my favourite at the moment. Another favourite is another UK artist called James Morrison with a song called 'Pieces dont fit anymore' - I've been twisting and turning, In a space that's too small. I've been drawing the line and watching it fall, You've been closing me in, closing the space in my heart. Watching us fading and watching it all fall apart. Chorus Well I can't explain why it's not enough, Cause I gave it all to you. And if you leave me now, oh just leave me now. It's the better thing to do, It's time to surrender, It's been to long pretending. Theres no use in trying, When the pieces don't fit anymore, Pieces don't fit here anymore. You pulled me under, If I had to give in. Such a beautiful myth, That's breaking my skin. Well I'll hide all the bruises, I'll hide all the damage that's done. But I show how I'm feeling until all the feeling has gone. (Chorus) Ooh don't missunderstand, How I feel. Cause I've tried, yes I've tried. But still I don't know why, no I don't know why. III dont know why...... whyyyyyyyy!

Joebo
Here's a relitively recent one - Far Away by Nickelback. Lyrics are much better if you actually hear the song. Its from the latest album All The Right Reasons. Give it a listen... Nickelback Far Away Lyrics This time, This place Misused, Mistakes Too long, Too late Who was I to make you wait Just one chance Just one breath Just in case there's just one left 'Cause you know, you know, you know [CHORUS] That I love you That I have loved you all along And I miss you From far away for far too long I keep dreaming you'll be with me and you'll never go Stop breathing if I don't see you anymore On my knees, I'll ask Last chance for one last dance 'Cause with you, I'd withstand All of hell to hold your hand I'd give it all I'd give for us Give anything but I won't give up 'Cause you know, you know, you know [CHORUS] That I love you That I have loved you all along And I miss you From far away for far too long I keep dreaming you'll be with me and you'll never go Stop breathing if I don't see you anymore So far away Been far away for far too long So far away Been far away for far too long But you know, you know, you know I wanted I wanted you to stay 'Cause I needed I need to hear you say That I love you I have loved you all along And I forgive you For being away for far too long So keep breathing 'Cause I'm not leaving you anymore Believe it Hold on to me and, never let me go Keep breathing 'Cause I'm not leaving you anymore Believe it Hold on to me and, never let me go Keep breathing Hold on to me and, never let me go Keep breathing Hold on to me and, never let me go

spookie
"I will" was my current ex and mine's "song". I'm glad I retained my love for the Beatles even after the breakup. It's amazing how versatile those songs are. "In My Life" spoke to me during my first breakup, back in high school; climbing the hills of San Francisco in my tennis shoes in the fog listening to my CD player, I thought, "this is it, 'in my life, I love you more.'" With this ex it spoke to me again. Different town, different feel to it completely, and yet I feel so goddam nostalgic whenever I hear that song; for him, this time; for those memories; Texas summer afternoons and making love in lakes. Pyro
Yeah, I guess if you like Puddle of Mudd appreciating Joy Divison or Billie Holliday might be beyond you.... More like underneath me. For the record, I am not much of a Puddle of Mudd fan. I just like the message that they send about not letting any woman walk all over you.

Come on, you cannot doubt the appropriateness of She Hates Me on this thread. That said, I saw Puddle of Mud live and they were crap. I'm surprised not to see any mention of Wonderful World by James Morrison. Great song. The pieces don't fit anymore is also very good.

I wasn't even referring to that song. That song is more along the lines of being proud that you have been dumped and that a lesson has been learned from it. I was thinking more along the lines of Control and Blurry.

Surely it doesn't have to be all melancholy here!
