flower
Hi I notice that some people can organise their things very well. The things can be files, documents, clothes, books, cds, money matters, work and stuff in their lives. But some people are poor in organising and packing things hence when it comes to retrieving the things, one has to search high and low. If you have any comments to share on being an organsied or disorganised person, please share and most importantly how to be a better organised person. Thanks!
Tony T
Some people are organized and some aren't. Some people buy address/phone number books and still write numbers on scrap paper and leave them all over their homes. I think it's a genetic thing myself. You are either organized or you're not. There are workshops and mini-courses on time management and organization. However, those who take them must use what they learn and those not so inclined will remain disorganized. Like anything else, if you put your mind to it you can do it. But there are some people who just prefer the chaos and uncertainty of disorganization.
yes
i agree that it's likely genetic, or something built-in during childhood. Many people take pleasure in organizing their stuff, their time, cleaning up, etc. I'm one of them - I enjoy seeing everything in order, so that it's clear what's done & what's next. I think the way to be better organized is to simply make it convenient for yourself- e.g. keep your phonebook by the phone, keep a calendar with all your appointments... Make sure these are small enough for you to take them with you. It also helps to treat yourself for being organized - e.g. don't have dinner until you've cleaned up the kitchen & put everything in place. It's easier this way, than cleaning up after you've eaten. Also, start every day by looking through your agenda/calendar, and finish each day with the same thing, writing in future appointments, goals, etc. good luck, -yes
zingy
when my daughter was young she had the cleanest room and the most organized room i'd ever seen a kid have and she did not want no one touching her stuff or messing up her room. now at age 22, oh my gawd! i cringe when i walk into her room, her house is clean but not her bedroom, eeeek! i don't know what happened to her along the way, but so opposite of when she was young. same with details, i know people who are so detailed oriented and i can miss the biggest detail of all!!!! winnieloveshunny
Hmmm.. I'm not always an organised person. Let's say I just packed my room and everything's neatly in place. As I'm still a student, my notes & books keep piling up by the day. What I'll do is I'll leave those unarranged stuffs at one particular corner. So when I have the time or feeling like packing, I just have to arrange those items and not my whole desk. In this way, I kind of know where to look for what I want. When it gets too messy, you know it's time to pack your room =O>
Author flower
Thanks for all of your replies. I guess it's the family environment, that's why I am striving hard to be a better organised person for my own good and also to be a neat example to my children in future. Looks like they are giving me a lesson in life even before they are born! have a great day!
MelanieRodriguez
Hi Flower, A few months ago, I also wondered about people's natural skills. I discovered a book called Now, Discover your Strengths. It was written by the Gallup Organization. I will not go into the details of the book, but the authors studied the behavior of 80,000 top achievers in the world and it explains that some people have natural talents, innate patterns of thought and behavior. That is the way your brain is wired. And that is what causes you to perform very well in certain roles and areas and poorly in others. The book comes with an on-line assessment test, to help you discover which themes are stronger for you. The book explains in details why people are wired differently - so that will answer your question. The whole theory of the book is that once the connections in your brain have been made, you can't really change them. So, if you are chronically disorganized, you will never become a super organizational freak. However, you can learn to do damage control and learn basic skills, so you can at least function, but it will never become a talent or a strength. What the authors focus on is that you should instead work at developping your own natural strengths and only do damage control of the areas of "weaknesses". That is what the greatest achievers in the world do. For example, if someone is totally disorganized, first, they learn enough about personal organization to function in the world, but they mostly, they focus on working AROUND that weakness. They will find jobs where organizational skills are not required, or they will delegate the organizational portion of their work to someone else, for which it is a strength. Organization happens to be one of my strengths and I made it part of my business. I help a lot of individuals to get organized, both in their personal and professional lives. I do what I do best, while they can focus on what THEY do best. I have rebuilt my entire life and company around this Strengths concept. You wouldn't believe the changes! I am Soooo much happier and fulfilled! I now have focus and purpose in my life and I am not casting myself into roles that are not suitable for me anymore! I sincerely hope this helps and will help you on the way to live a live centered around YOUR own strengths! And remember, no strengths are better or worst than others. They are simply different and unique and need to be managed differently. Good luck! Melanie Rodriguez
yes
that sounds like a pretty good idea - developing and using your strengths, and "damage control"ing your weaknesses. when you put it this way, it seems common sense! of course you'll enjoy yourself more if you're doing what you do best - you see results, you're appreciated, it's great. i'll definitely check out that book. thanks, MR!! So - what other interesting things have you been upto, aside from restructuring your business based on this book & buying a juicer? -yes
