Dating your best friend?

This has to do with the age old issue of whether or not it is a good idea to date your best friend. I know there is no right answer, but I can use some advice to shed some light on the matter.

Me and my best friend made out New Years Eve. We talked about what happened a few days later, she admitting to me that she was very interested in pursuing it even further. I told her I didn't think it was a good idea because I think I value our friendship too much to risk it. I know, total guy response.

So after that was said, it happened again a few nights ago. Not smart yeah, but it happened and now I am conflicted. I am very interested in finding out what could happen, but she is not some girl I just met. If it doesn't work out, things will be very complicated. I see her all the time, we have many mutual friends, and I've done this before and it hasn't worked out.

I've also held onto the notion that someday I will meet this girl that will be everything I ever wanted and more. I've thought I have met this girl many times before, and I was flat wrong. It always ended badly. With my best friend, she doesn't strike me as the type of girl that makes me say "Wow, I knew it was her from the start." But there is very much to like about her, and I know she won't provide the drama that the other girls came with. Should I just realize that the image I have of meeting someone is just a fairy tell and, for the lack of a better phrase, go for a sure thing?

Like I said, I will take any advice that can be given. I am very confused at the moment on what to do.
