Stomach Pain :-(

Over the past year or so, I have had "stomach problems" such as constant indigestion, heatburn, frequent constipation, and an occassional burning sensation in my stomach. Just recently, I got diagnosed as having acid reflux disorder (gerd), and I may possibly have ulcers. I have been given med's to help the reflux, as well as constipation, but I am really concerned about my overall diet. My doctor did not advice me to change my diet too much, go figure??? I am looking for advice on what type of foods will help reduce syptoms, and "safe" foods I can eat that will not cause me to have a stomach ache. So far, I did the following:

 

- eliminated all carbonated beverages from my diet (haven't had one in months). Also, I do not drink alcohol, limit coffee to only when I am working or in the morning.

 

- I do not eat anything high in fat...well, maybe when I go out to eat I cheat a little and will treat myself to something with butter or gravy in it (which is rare).

 

- I limit spicy and acidic foods. This I had to do for months now even before I was diagnosed because certain food cause so much pain. Some example are anything with vinegar, acidy vegetables such as brocolli, no hot peppers or anything containing them, etc.

 

- increased fiber in my diet as per my doctors request, and as a result increased my carb's. I have noticed since doing this, eating plain white bread seems to help my stomach a little...go figure!

 

- lifestyle changes...not many could be made. I work nights, and can't get on a normal sleeping pattern. Also, I exercise regularly by hiking every weekend (including mountain climbing), mountain biking, playing tennis, swimming, walking about 10-15 miles a week in town, etc. But I was already doing the above physical activities.

 

I have no idea what else I can do diet-wise, and was wondering if anyone on this board had any pointers. Other pointers not concerning my diet are also welcome.

I wanted to ask you if you eat a lot of fruit. I'm not well read in the area of nutrition but if you have stomach problems that include constipation it makes me wonder if your diet has neglected fruit. You should be eating at least five to six pieces of fresh fruit a day to help keep you regular. Hope this helps.

I have acid reflux & am taking my meds, with which I can eat any type of food without the indigestion problems. I also have an ulcer which means a very bland diet (I eat bland food anyway) and tragically limit dairy products! 

 

Everyone is a little different, but try to do some exercise during the week too – 10 or 15 minutes every day will help, and increase your water intake. Eating more fruit may be good too, but like veggies, you need to stay away from the overly acidic fruit (limit citrus) try pears, peaches, and kiwi.

 

If you haven’t switched to lite salt – now is a good time to start. Morton Light salt is just as good as regular. Cut down on salt intake too – including salty foods.

Thanks for all the pointers. Lately, I have been feeling better, I think my meds may be finally kicking in...I hope! I am still eating a high fiber diet, low fat, exercising when I am not working 12-14 hour days, very low sugar diet, etc. Also, I am eating more fruit, esp. cantalope and watermelon since they are now in season, and contain a great deal of water.
