Best way to gain weight

Recommended Posts

I am petite and I have been trying to gain weight for the past year or so. A lot of people is saying to eat a lot of pasta and foods with a lot of starch. Pasta doesnt make me feel full. Sort of like when you eat a lot of something and you still feel hungry.

Whats the best way to put on about 15 pounds?

I don't know how old you are but when I was in my late teens and early 20s I only weight about 87 lbs.. I was petite, skinny.. I hated myself.

I bought those shakes to take over my meal (over 4000 calories or something like that) I took sooo many stuff...nothing.. absolutely nothing.

I didn't gain one ounce. I started to gain weight in my late 30s.

Then at 45 I went down to 102.. I was very skinny again (except for my boobs lol)...

I don't want to discourage you, I know exactly how you feel.. but I'm afraid that there is not much to do..

See a doctor, have a complete check-up (thyroid and everything), if nothing is wrong healthwise, I say.. be patient.. you have a high metabolism... (nervous type) but you'll eventually want to lose weight...

Thanx Lizzie.

I am in my late twenties early thirties. I think I may just have a high metabolism. My mom said she was petitie just like me, and then once she got older she started to gain the weight.

Live with me for a week - I can put the weight on you! ;)

Seriously though, proteins and starch and balance it with fruit and veggies. Watch your carb and sugar though because you don't want to gain weight in an unhealthy manner.

Some of the health-food stores have some powders that you mix with milk to help gain weight. Personally, I would start with your doctor and find what's right for you.

Muscle building exercises and workouts designed to not burn as many calories while giving your muscles - including your heart muscle - a healthy workout would be good. You might check with a personal trainer or a gym to see what they have for people to put on healthy weight.

Its more about body health than what shows on the scales. I'm the opposite - I can lose weight, but I've done it 'wrong' in the past and it hurt my health. I tried to get down to a certain weight on the scale and looked worse. Body-building is the way to go.

Good luck, I know that gaining weight or bulking up can be just as difficult as losing and trimming down.

EC, has your thyroid been checked?

Assuming you are healthy, you could do some weight training (lifting). This can help give you a more shapely physique. (Not implying anything negative about your current physique, but sometimes being very thin = less curvy.)

I think it's important to realize we all have a natural set weight, and in most cases, it's really hard to deter and maintain from that. So, if your genetics are such that you are thin and petite, eating a high calorie diet may not do much for that. Much as someone with a higher set weight can diet down, but they will certainly rebound to that weight.

I agree that as you age, you will find your metabolism and body will change such that you will put on weight (and then probably curse it! lol).

I suggest learning to love your body as it is. You sound healthy, active, and THAT in itself is a beautful thing.

PS. Thats the point of eating simple carbs - they raise your sugar so high, and then plumet it, so you still feel hungry and continue to eat! Thats why many dieters will cut out processed starches and all white foods (pasta, bread, potatoes, etc.).

I have heard that increasing your carb intake is a way to put weight on and consuming those carb's close to your bed time when your body can not metabolize them as well is best for extra pound's.

Thanx Jilly ,

U always say the right things!

:) YW, girl!

I'd rather see you be thin and healthy, than stuffing yourself with high calorie fats, carbs and other assorted junk food on a quest to gain weight, that probably won't accomplish anything except raise your cholesterol and blood pressure.

On the other hand, think how many women would LOVE to have your figure. I'm sure you look smashing as you are. :)

You're not alone, Candy. I have the same problem. You can do this. I've already gained almost 4 pounds since the first week of January.

Ok, your mistake above is this: Do NOT drink those things WITH your meals. Drink them in between meals.

First of all, how many times a day do you eat?

Anyway, if you want to gain here's what you do. Try this:

1. Eat like you normally eat only add one shake a day. I drink Carnation Instant Breakfast with whole milk. But only have it in between or a couple of hours BEFORE a meal.

2. Eat 1 cup of Haagen Dasz (sp?) at least twice a week. That's about one pint a week. Split it up however you want though. I just eat a cup twice a week. (half the container at a time.)

3. If you drink coffee, limit yourself to one cup a day and use heavy cream in it (if you use milk.) That's about 50 cals a spoonful. That's 350 in a week!

Ok, if you do NOTHING ELSE, but just do those things, you WILL gain weight. You'll gain close to a pound a week.

The one shake a day plus 2 cups of ice cream a week alone add up to 3,080 cals. And you need 3500 cals extra a week to gain a pound.

So try that. That's so easy and there's no way you won't gain.

I normally shoot for 1/2 pound a week but I've been gaining at a higher rate by doing the above. I started my diet on Jan. 3 and I've gained 3 1/2 pounds since.

I did this diet in 2005 and gained 12 pounds and then stopped. I went back to old bad habits and lost most of it. So I'm going for it again. This time I will maintain it once I reach my desired goal.

Good luck, and let us know of your progress. You can do this! Seriously, if I can anyone can. I've had this problem my whole life. But I've done it before and you can do it too.

Candy, I tried to PM you back but it said you're not accepting PM's. Maybe your inbox is full?

Anyway, let me know when I can PM you back and I will. But in the meantime, to answer your question, yes it's Carnation Instant Breakfast. They come in many flavors. I think the vanilla is pretty good as it's not too rich. But try them all and see what you think.

Are you putting stuff in your mouth right now? Idle hands are the skinny person's worst enemy. Make sure you don't waste any opportunity to swallow some extra protein.

To be honest, I find this thread a little offensive. Lots of people would want to have your "problem," yet you come on here to gloat about it.

Cute, Dumb. (I like your name by the way...very appropriate.) This is serious though. Would you tell a fat person to do something else with their hands other than feed themselves?

You know what, dumb, you're offensive. This is a very serious problem that some of us have and I for one, don't appreciate your attitude. No one is "gloating." And yes, it IS a problem. Get a clue!

Are you jealous? Well don't be. Our problem is just as serious as someone who is overweight.

I am terribly sorry. I wholeheartedly apologise to everybody except BareGoddess, who has some kind of attitude.

I am probably jealous of thin people, and I admit that. Once again, I am sorry.
