Hoffle
I was at a bar on sat night after I had a few glasses of the finest wine, a nice girl approached the bar; she ordered a drink and sat down on the stole next to me, after several gazes in her direction, I yell out "Hello" in a rather melodramatic voice, to which she simply smiles and says 'hello', we then got into a brief discussion where I bought her a drink and we carried on talking, though I was slurring my words ever so slightly and was feeling rather drunk. So a few minutes later, I ask her the most ridiculous question "do you have a boyfriend", to which she replied "yes", I then took swift leave, left the bar with my friends and went elsewhere. Luckily she was not a local and I doubt I'll ever see her again, but WTF, I made a complete shambless of that, acted like a bit of creep on top. Would the best advice be not to drink before striking conversation with a woman. I mean, she probably thought "its just another sad act who's only after one thing". Which was not true, I was just quite drunk and didn't really know what the hell I was saying or doing, thankfully for me I went home shortly after and fell asleep. Sometimes having a drink or two will help boost the confidence level, so a few drinks couldn't hurt but you said you were slurring your words, so you probably had a few too many and you scared her and she more than likely assumed that you just wanted to get in her pants. Let it be a lesson for the next time.
Author Hoffle
I take it asking such a question after only ten mins of conversation is a no, no then?

Author Hoffle
Pyro, to be honest I was somewhat smashed, and I was only sitting up at the bar because I couldn't be bothered to move, and I suppose it must be off putting for a woman to have a drunk making swift advances eh? And I'm pleased to feel that it wasn't creepy of me to ask her if she had a boyfriend in such a small time frame. I feel so much better. Plus there's also the possibility she said she had a boyfriend because she actually has one, or just wanted me to go away/aka she wasnt interested. But yes a lesson has been learnt, here. From talking to my female friends, I can tell you that the only creepy part was talking to her with the slurred voice. Like I said, limit the amount you drink before you talk to a female. tanbark813
Like I said, limit the amount you drink before you talk to a female. Or up your tolerance. But I agree with Pyro, the time scale doesn't have a whole lot to do with it. You could get shot down right off the bat or you could get her number in a few minutes. There's no hard and fast rule. No set of rules etched in stone. Expect the unexpected.
sb129
A woman texted into the free london paper (the section where you can text people who you have seen on public transport and let them know you fancy the), "to the guy in the blue jumper who was throwing up on the (insert line) line on Friday night. Even though some of your puke got on my shoes, You are cute fancy another drink?" All sorts people, there are all sorts out there.
Author Hoffle
I'm lightweight, too. I'll give it a try next time and see how it goes, thanks for the tips.

Author Hoffle
I told my friend who just rang me now about the incident and she said, a lot of women would find that extremely off putting if asked after only ten minutes of conversation.

I don't agree with that. They should know that chances are if a guy is going to start talking to a female its because he is interested in her, so its good for him to know so he is not wasting his time or hers talking. melodymatters
Really, I think you are over thinking this ! Guys talk to girls at bars and elsewhere ALL of the time, and they often ask the BF question. It's almost a form of politeness in that the subtext is " I won't hit on you or ask you out if you say you do". Relax and next time just don't get so drunk !

It's almost a form of politeness in that the subtext is " I won't hit on you or ask you out if you say you do". Relax and next time just don't get so drunk ! The problem is that his friend thinks that its a turn-off to ask a single female the "do you have a BF" question after only ten minutes of talking, which I think is ridiculous. yongyong
I don't agree with that. It's like saying 'I want to **** you' compared to saying 'do you want to watch movie at my house?' being honest won't work. I don't agree with that. canadian_jeff
this is such a funny post, does anyone really believe this girl had a boyfriend? She talks to him for ten minutes, allows him to buy her a drink, and follows up with the do you have a bf? Ok, Ill admitt, when it comes to dazzling the ladies, im the last guy you should take advice from, seriously, im terrible, but I know she was into you.....for the following reason, her initial thoughts were not "this guy who has had one too many will make for great conversation for the next ten minutes, although I have a boyfriend Ill let him buy me a drink and slur pick up lines at me" I think maybe she thought you were drunk because you talked to her, she was giving off signs, and then you ask a question like that......., you may have been better off buying her a drink, watch her drink it, then ask if she drinks alcohol, sorry pal, she was into you, and she did not have a boyfriend

Because she isn't interested? Yeah, that's a possibility, it's a simple yes, or no answer. I don't want to chat to this girl for several hours to find out it's been a complete waste of my time. I want to cut to the chase, I like you - you like me, lets exchange numbers, have small talk and then date and see what happens. I haven't got time to waste, my friend, I'm a busy man with lots of plans and ambitions in life. Though, I have taken your advice on board and thank you for it.
